Ferroelectric ceramic – polymer composites have a unique mix of electrical and mechanical properties. Piezoelectric and pyroelectric activity, a wide range of dielectric constants and high breakdown strength are combined with mechanical flexibility, formab ...

Artificially prepared superhydrophobic surfaces toward a self-cleaning "lotus effect" and anticontamination performance have become critically important in the past few years. However, most approaches to create the required topology with a hierarchical rou ...

Solvent cast and compression molded composite films based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene), containing pristine and silylated BaTiO3 particles, were poled, and their electromechanical response (d(33)), their dielectric properties, and the cry ...

The working electrode of a dye-sensitized photovoltaic fiber is constituted of a porous TiO2 coated titanium wire. The cohesion and adhesion of such a brittle oxide coating on the ductile metal substrate are identified as crucial factors in maintaining pho ...

The aim of this work is to understand the interactions and interphase formation mechanisms between a liquid aminosilane oligomer (γ -APS) and glass, steel or gold surfaces as a function of the pH of the liquid aminosilane. When basic liquid γ -APS (pH 11.4 ...

Thermoset based resins and composites usually exhibit limited ability to be reprocessed due to their highly crosslinked structure, making their reuse and recycling particularly challenging. Strategies to promote the reshaping and reuse of thermoset resins thus hold great promise towards reduction of waste and enhanced circularity. This research aims to develop innovative dynamic composite materials that offer tunable mechanical stiffness and shape adaptability. To this end, dynamic disulfide bonds and ester

This review article provides an overview of the research and applications of soft self-healing polymers and their nanocomposites. A number of concepts based on physical and chemical interactions have been explored to create dynamic and reversible gel and e ...

A novel concept for an advanced fenestration system was studied and samples were produced to demonstrate the feasibility. The resulting novel glazing will combine the functions of daylighting, glare protection, and seasonal thermal control. Coated microstr ...

The rheological behavior of two hyperbranched polymer/silica suspensions with different dispersion states, surface chemistries, and concentrations of the silica nanoparticles was investigated in terms of viscoelastic properties, activation energy for viscous flow, and yield stress. The viscoelastic properties of both types of suspensions were reduced to a master curve that was a function of the limiting viscosity and shear modulus. A liquid-to-solid transition and correlated activation energy change were fo

Reliable long-term function is crucial for flexible and soft bioelectronics. Mechanical defects and permeation of water molecules across the various device layers are the prime drivers of failure, and particularly in applications requiring continuous conta ...

The effect of temperature on the crack onset strain (COS) of brittle coatings on polymer substrates was investigated through a series of temperature-controlled tensile tests carried out in situ under an optical microscope. It was observed that the failure ...

Next-generation bioelectronic implants require miniaturization, durability, and long-term functionality. Thin film encapsulations, prepared with inorganic or hybrid organic/inorganic designs, are essential for ensuring protection, low water permeation, ada ...

Nanocomposites based on 10 to 60 vol % cellulose nanofibers (NFC) in a photopolymerizable hyperbranched acrylate matrix were prepared. Unmodified NFC and NFC chemically modified with a silane coupling agent and with ceric ammonium nitrate for direct polyme ...

The mechanical integrity of tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) thin films sputtered onto a high temperature aromatic polyester developed for flexible display applications was investigated by means of tensile experiments equipped with electrical measurement, and carried out in-situ in an optical microscope. Attention was paid to the influence of ITO thickness, composition and crystalline microstructure, internal stress, annealing, and polymer substrate. It was observed that process-induced internal stresses were s

Cohesive and adhesive properties of silicon oxide barrier coatings deposited from an oxygen/hexamethyldisiloxane gas mixture by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition, with controlled incorporation of carbon on 12 mm thick polyethylene terephtalate film ...

Aminosilane solutions with pH equal to 8 and to 11 were applied and cured on SiO2 coated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films. The permeability of the silane-silica hybrid coating on PET was reduced twofold compared to that of the SiO2/PET film, at sol ...

Among the century’s main challenges, climate change and the need for energy sources diversification are of great importance. In this context, renewable energies undoubtedly have an important role to play. Photovoltaic (PV) electricity is especially well su ...

Surgical sealants are widely used in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery essentially for hemostasis and sealing. Their adhesive properties have mainly been studied by clinical experiments. The objective of this study is to measure adhesion of the three main types of surgical sealant used in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery under normalized realistic conditions. The bulge-and-blister test was used to quantify adhesive performances of three types of surgical adhesives: cyanoacrylates, polyethylene glycol (

This perspective gives an overview of recent progress in thefield of photocured polymer composites based on variousforms of nanocelluloses, with a focus on cellulose nanofibrils. The manufacturing processes and performances of these nanocellulosecomposites ...

Two different interpenetrating phase composites were produced using a radical photoinduced cationic frontal polymerization process. The composites were based on polyurethane (PU) and aluminium open-cell foams impregnated with a formulation of a cycloalipha ...
