We consider the joint design of rate adaptation, power adaptation and mutual exclusion for the MAC layer of a multi-hop, ad-hoc wireless network. We assume the physical layer supports a variable bit-rate. Most of the existing MACs analyze impacts of only one of these elements, and the jointly optimal strategy is not known. We assume that successive decoding is not implemented, i.e. one receiver decodes only one source at a time. Using a theoretical model that neglects protocol overhead, we numerically find

We analyze some queueing problems arising in guaranteed service and controlled load networks using min-plus algebra. We find an explicit representation for the sub-additive closure of the minimum of two operators, and we introduce a new, useful family of idempotent, time-varying, and min-plus linear operators. We model queueing systems arising in networks networks as non-linear min-plus systems that can be bounded by linear systems, and apply our concepts to: the optimal shaper studied by Anantharam and Kon

An epidemic that spreads in a network calls for a decision on the part of the network users. They have to decide whether to protect themselves or not. Their decision depends on the trade-off between their perceived infection and the protection cost. Aiming to help users reach an informed decision, various security advisories provide periodic information about the infection level in the network. We study the best-response dynamic in a network whose users repeatedly activate or de-activate security, depending

The increase in the penetration of wind in the current energy mix is hindered by its high volatility and poor predictability. These shortcomings lead to energy loss and increased deployment of fast-ramping generators. The use of energy storage compensates to some extent these negative effects; it plays a buffer role between demand and production. We revisit a model of storage proposed by Bejan, Gibbens and Kelly. We study the impact on the performance of energy conversion efficiency and of wind prediction q

We propose a system and method for providing a ``throughput versus delay'' differentiated service for IP packets. We distinguish two types of traffic: type A and type B. It is expected that type A traffic receives less throughput per flow than type B. On the other hand, type A packets experience considerably smaller delay. The method is intended to be implemented in Internet routers. No bandwidth or buffer reservation is assumed in this system. The service remains a Best Effort service, thus supporting flat

We study the convergence of Markov decision processes, composed of a large number of objects, to optimization problems on ordinary differential equations. We show that the optimal reward of such a Markov decision process, which satisfies a Bellman equation, converges to the solution of a continuous Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation based on the mean field approximation of the Markov decision process. We give bounds on the difference of the rewards and an algorithm for deriving an approximating solution

We study the effect of energy-storage systems in dynamic real-time electricity markets. We consider that demand and renewable generation are stochastic, that real-time production is affected by ramping constraints, and that market players seek to selfishly maximize their profit. We distinguish three scenarios, depending on the owner of the storage system: (A) the supplier, (B) the consumer, or (C) a stand-alone player. In all cases, we show the existence of a competitive equilibrium when players are price-t

The increase in penetration of wind in the current energy mix is hindered by its high volatility and poor predictability. These shortcomings lead to energy loss and increased deployment of fast ramping generation. The use of energy storage compensates to some extent these negative effects; it plays a buffer role between demand and production. We revisit a model of real storage proposed by Bejan et al.[1]. We study the impact on performance of energy conversion efficiency and of wind prediction quality. Spec

We study the effect of deployment of low cost, low power micro base stations along with macro base stations on energy consumption and capacity of downlink LTE. [1] studied this problem, using spectral area efficiency as the performance metric. We show that the analysis proposed in [1] is inaccurate as the traffic layer specifications of LTE networks is not included in the analysis. We also investigate the effect of user association and frequency band allocation schemes on energy consumption and capacity of

Real-time control systems (RTCSs) perform complex control and require low response times. They typically use third-party software libraries and are deployed on generic hardware, which suffer from delay faults that can cause serious damage. To improve avail ...

In this paper, we present a new method for the estimation of the prediction-error covariances of a Kalman filter (KF), which is suitable for step-varying processes. The method uses a series of past innovations (i.e., the difference between the upcoming mea ...

We propose Alternative Best-Effort (ABE), a novel service for IP networks, which relies on the idea of providing low-delay at the expense of maybe less throughput. The objective is to retain the simplicity of the original Internet single class, best effort service, while providing low delay to interactive, adaptive applications. With ABE, every best effort packet is marked as either green or blue. Green packets are guaranteed a low bounded delay in every router. In exchange, green packets are more likely to

We consider the question of what performance metric to maximize when designing adhoc wireless network protocols such as routing or MAC. We focus on maximizing rates under battery lifetime and power constraints. Commonly used metrics are total capacity (in the case of cellular networks) and transport capacity (in the case of adhoc networks). However, it is known in traditional wired networking that maximizing total capacity conflicts with fairness, and this is why fairness oriented rate allocations, such as

Reliable packet delivery within stringent delay constraints is of primal importance to industrial processes with hard real-time constraints, such as electrical grid monitoring. Because retransmission and coding techniques counteract the delay requirements, ...

We show that network coding allows to realize significant energy savings in a wireless ad-hoc network, when each node of the network is a source that wants to transmit information to all other nodes. Energy efficiency directly affects battery life and thus is a critical design parameter for wireless ad-hoc networks. We propose an implementable method for performing network coding in such a setting. We analyze theoretical cases in detail, and use the insights gained to propose a practical, fully distributed

We consider the problem of routing in a wide area mobile ad-hoc network called Terminode Network. Routing in such a network is designed with the following objectives. Firstly, it should scale well in terms of the number of nodes and geographical coverage, secondly, routing should have scalable mechanisms that cope with the dynamicity in the network due to mobility, and thirdly nodes need to be highly collaborative and redundant, but, most of all, cannot use complex algorithms or protocols. Our routing schem

In the first part of this two-part paper we show that the branch-flow convexification of the OPF problem is not exact and that the ADMM-based decomposition of the OPF fails to converge in specific scenarios. Therefore, there is a need to develop algorithms ...

Self-organized networks require some mechanism to ensure cooperation and fairness in the face of individual utility maximizing users and potential malicious attacks. Otherwise, network performance can be seriously deteriorated. One promising approach are decentralized reputation systems. However, these are vulnerable to users with an interest in passing on false information. Robustness against liars has not yet been analyzed in detail. In this paper, we provide a first step to the robustness analysis of a r

We propose a MAC protocol for very low radiated power (1 microwatt) ultra-wide band (UWB) mobile ad-hoc networks. Unlike traditional approaches, our protocol fully utilizes the specific nature of the physical layer of UWB. This makes it possible to reach a reasonably high bit rate per source in spite of the low power, while being fully distributed. We use dynamic channel coding as an efficient way to adapt to varying channel conditions due to mobility and interference. Our design is based on existing theore
