This paper compares the performance of ABR and UBR for providing high-speed network interconnection services for TCP traffic. We test the hypothesis that UBR with adequate buffering in the ATM switches results in better overall goodput for TCP traffic than explicit rate ABR for LAN interconnection. This is shown to be true in a wide selection of scenarios. Four phenomena that may lead to bad ABR performance are identified and we test whether each of these has a significant impact on TCP goodput. This reveal

This paper presents a systematic approach for abstracting the flexibility of a building space heating system and using it within a composable framework for real-time explicit power control of microgrids and, more in general, active distribution networks. I ...

We consider the problem of multicast routing in a large single domain network with a very large number of multicast groups with small number of receivers. Such a case occurs, for example, when multicast addresses are statically allocated to mobile hosts, as a mechanism to manage Internet host mobility. For such networks, existing dense or sparse mode multicast routing algorithms do not scale well with the number of multicast groups. We propose an alternative solution called Distributed Core Multicast (DCM).

We describe recent advances in theories and architecture that support performance guarantees needed for quality of service networks. We start with deterministic computations and give applications to integrated services, differentiated services, and playback delays. We review the methods used for obtaining a scalable integrated services support, based on the concept of a stateless core. New probabilistic results that can be used for a statistical dimensioning of differentiated services are explained; some ar

Consider a network with an arbitrary topology and arbitrary communication delays, in which congestion control is based on additive--increase and multiplicative--decrease. We show that the source rates tend to be distributed in order to maximize an objective function called

fairness`). We derive this result under the assumption of rate proportional negative feedback and for the regime of rare negative feedback. This applies to TCP in moderately loaded networks, and to those TCP implementat

We study the impact of deployment of low cost, low power micro base stations along with macro base stations on energy consumption and capacity of downlink LTE. We add three important elements to the existing studies: a traffic layer analysis that take both the physical and traffic layer specifications of LTE downlink into account; a threshold-based policy to associate users to base stations; and an allocation scheme to allocate the frequency band to macro and micro sites. We investigate all combinations of

In mobile ad-hoc networks, nodes act both as terminals and information relays, and participate in a common routing protocol, such as Dynamic Source Routing (DSR). The network is vulnerable to routing misbehavior, due to faulty or malicious nodes. Misbehavior detection systems aim at removing this vulnerability. For this purpose, we use an Artificial Immune System (AIS), a system inspired by the human immune system (HIS). Our goal is to build a system that, like its natural counterpart, automatically learns

Giving users simple access to QoS selection capability of ATM networks is important for the future of integrated services networks. We describe the first instance of an application in which users had the capacity to tune ATM traffic parameters with a button, at run time. To achieve this we implemented the necessary signaling extension on ATM switches as well as on end-systems. Furthermore, we extended Arequipa (Application REQested IP over ATM; a mechanism that enables applications to request direct ATM con

Current TCP-friendly congestion control mechanisms such as those used in TFRC adjust the packet rate in order to adapt to network conditions and obtain a throughput not exceeding that of a TCP connection operating under the same conditions. In an environment where the bottleneck resource is packet processing, this is the correct behavior. However, if the bottleneck resource is bandwidth, and flows may use packets of different sizes, resource sharing then depends on packet size and is no longer fair. Now for

We identify vulnerabilities in epidemic forwarding. We address broadcast applications over wireless ad-hoc networks. Epidemic forwarding employs several mechanisms such as inhibition and spread control and each of them can be achieved using different alternative methods. Thus, vulnerabilities existence is highly dependent on the used methods. We examine the links between them. We classify vulnerabilities into two categories: Malicious and rational. We examine the attack impact according to the number of att

In IR (Impulse Radio) network, the conventional synchronization (also called signal acquisition) method becomes inefficient and results in a certain failure of synchronization when concurrent transmissions are allowed without controlling their powers. The ...

The failure of a single optical link or node in a Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) network may cause the simultaneous failure of several optical channels. In some cases, this simultaneity may make it impossible for the higher level (SONET or IP) to restore service. This occurs when the higher level is not aware of the internal details of network design at the WDM level. We call this phenomenon ``failure propagation

We propose a novel detection method for non-coherent synchronization in multi-access UWB impulse radio (IR) networks. It is designed to solve the IUI (Inter-User Interference) in particular the Near-Far scenario in the presence of concurrent UWB IR transmissions with multiple interfering transmitters, asynchronous transmissions and heterogeneous power levels, as can be found in ad-hoc networks. In such scenarios, the conventional synchronization method, which is based on correlating the received IR signal w

We present a new approach for estimating the parameters of three-phase untransposed electrically short transmission lines using voltage/current synchrophasor measurements obtained from phasor measurement units. The parameters to be estimated are the entrie ...

Recent papers have pointed out that data traffic exhibits self-similarity, but self-similarity is observed only on a finite timescale. In order to account for that, we introduce the concept of pseudo long-range dependencies. In this paper, we describe a Modulated Markov process producing self-similarity on a finite timescale; the process is quite easy to manipulate and depends only on three parameters (two real numbers and one integer). An advantage of using it is that it is possible to re-use the well-know

We propose a high-resolution ranging algorithm for impulse radio (IR) ultra-WideBand (UWB) communication systems in additive white Gaussian noise. We formulate the ranging problem as a maximum- likelihood (ML) estimation problem for the channel delays and ...

In real-time control of electric grids using multiple software agents, the control performance depends on (1) the proper functioning of the software agents, i.e., absence of software faults, and (2) the behavior of software agents in the presence of non-id ...

We define general concepts that extend, and simplify, the network calculus developed by Cruz [1,2, 3] for guaranteed quality of service networks. We introduce a definition of service curve, the extended service curve, which is the same for isolated queues and for networks of queues, and makes it possible to model nodes that otherwise do not fit in the calculus of Cruz. We introduce two key technical tools, the
