In the coastal regions, the land subsidence due to the industrial pumping of underground fluids such as methane is documented by the means of in situ surveys. The laboratory characterization of the gas bearing formations has also been published, which comp ...

The safe storage of CO2 in deep reservoir units requires an efficient sealing of the overlaying caprock. The acidic environment caused by the dissolution of CO2 into the pore fluid can induce changes in the microstructure of the material over the long term ...

Rainfall-induced landslides in volcanic ashes represent a major natural hazard in many regions around the world. Due to their loose structure, volcanic ash slopes are prone to rainfall-induced landslides. The paper presents a continuum modelling approach f ...

CO2 storage in deep aquifers is considered as a potential technology to reduce the greenhouse effects of CO2. Practically, a large-volume (>1 Mt/year) of CO2 could be injected into a system that consists of a highly porous host aquifer covered by a low-permeability sealing caprock. High-rate injection could result in the abrupt build-up of fluid pressures, deforming the aquifer and compromising the integrity of the caprock. The interaction between the fluid pressure and the mechanical reaction of the host a

Energy geostructures are rapidly gaining acceptance around the world; they represent a renewable and clean source of energy that can be used for the heating and cooling of buildings and for de-icing of infrastructures. This technology couples the structura ...

Investigating the enhanced mechanical response of treated soils through microbially induced calcite precipitation requires extensive understanding of the pore structure. Depending on the applied treatment conditions, the resulted material exhibits distinct ...

A numerical simulation of the hydro-mechanical behaviour of an unsaturated porous medium is presented. The coupled hydro-mechanical model used is based on the continuum theory of mixtures and treats the unsaturated soil as a three phase porous medium (soli ...

In Switzerland, Opalinus Clay shale has been selected as the host formation for radioactive waste disposal. The minimum required depth of the repository is related to the long-lasting isolation required for the disposal (1 million years). During this perio ...

Elastic properties of gas shales are of utmost importance for the exploitation of shale gas reservoirs. Static elastic properties are usually measured by performing unloading-reloading cycles in uniaxial or triaxial compressive tests. The response of gas s ...

Geologic CO2 sequestration is considered to be the most promising technique to reduce the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Among all the storage options, deep saline aquifers have the greatest potential and due to their worldwide occurr ...

Anisotropic fabric and volumetric response to suction changes represent two main features of shales, which are involved in several engineering applications. However, a comprehensive understanding of the interaction between these two aspects is still missin ...

The response of clayey materials to thermal variation has been the subject of extensive studies, given the wide range of engineering applications which involve subjecting soils to substantial temperature fluctuations. A number of hypotheses have been propo ...

Experimental evidence shows that changes in pore-water chemistry can significantly affect the mechanical behavior of saturated active clays. Despite this evidence, how the chemical composition of the pore water can be considered in effective stress definit ...

Understanding the behaviour of soil-structure interfaces is critical for addressing the analysis and design of energy geostructures. In this study, the interface failure mechanism of energy piles (where a shear band is detached from the surrounding soil th ...

Landslides represent a major threat to human life, constructed facilities and infrastructure in most mountainous regions of the world. Considering future climate scenarios and modified precipitation patterns, the landslide activity will most probably chang ...

This paper focuses on the main issues discussed during a session on the impact of thermohydromechanical behavior of soils on thermoactive geotechnical systems, and how they could affect the performance of thermoactive geotechnical systems. Both soil behavi ...

Although the adaptation of deep foundations into heat exchangers is receiving growing attention, geothermal research is focusing mostly on energy optimization aspects. Meanwhile, the primary bearing function of the foundation must remain unaltered. Also, p ...

Bio-chemical processes have recently become the core of several studies in the geoengineering field, where the emphasis is placed on new and emerging applications. Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation has been introduced as an alternative cementation ...

We introduce the application of microbial-induced calcite precipitation via the ureolytic soil bacterium Sporosarcina Pasteurii in freeze-dried form, as a means of enhancing overall MICP efficiency and reproducibility for geotechnical engineering applicati ...

« Environmental Geomechanics » is a relatively new discipline at the interface between built and natural environment. It is devoted to the understanding of the mechanical behavior of geomaterials (mainly soil and rock but also concrete and others) under various environmental conditions. The new theories and models developed in this context will find applications in a large field of engineering (waste disposal, underground structures, agriculture, natural disasters, energy production, depollution, etc.).
