This paper expands on the impact of the thermally induced deformation of the soil on the serviceability mechanical performance (i.e., deformation-related) of energy pile groups. The work is based on the results of a full-scale in-situ test that was perform ...

Water loss during flowback operations represents one of the main challenges related to the use of hydraulic stimulation to exploit shale gas resources. About 20% of the injected fracturing fluids are usually recovered after stimulation. Fluid imbibition is ...

The present invention concerns a geosynthetic element (1) for a geotechnical engineering application. The geosynthetic element (1) comprises: bacteria carriers (3) for carrying bacteria arranged to be propagated from the geosynthetic element (1) to a surro ...

This paper is aimed at showing the efficiency of discrete element modelling for the prediction and understanding of drying shrinkage and associated cracking. The discrete element approach used is presented first. Cohesive forces between grains, as well as ...

This book collects selected full papers presented at the International Symposium on Energy Geotechnics 2018 (SEG-2018), held on 25th – 28th September 2018, at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). It covers a wide range of topics in energy geotechnics, including energy geostructures, energy geostorage, thermo-hydro-chemo-mechanical behaviour of geomaterials, unconventional resources, hydraulic stimulation, induced seismicity, CO2 geological storage, and nuclear waste disposal as well

This paper introduces an unconventional constitutive model for soils which deals with a unified thermo-mechanical modelling for unsaturated soils. The relevant temperature and suction effects are studied in light of elasto-plasticity. A generalized effecti ...

The purpose of this paper is to present a new finite element formulation for the hydro-thermo-mechanical analysis of elasto-plastic multiphase materials based on Porous Media Mechanics. To this end, the ACMEG-T thermo-plastic constitutive model for saturat ...

Environmental geotechnics involves several engineering applications (such as the salinification of groundwater and the storage of nuclear wastes) for which a deep understanding of the chemo-mechanical behaviour of soils is a fundamental component. Despite ...

Energy piles are heat capacity systems that have been increasingly exploited to provide both supplies of energy and structural support to civil structures. The energy and geotechnical behaviours of such foundations, which are governed by their response to ...

Currently, although several tools have been proposed for the numerical modelling of the pile-soil interface, there is not a well-established framework concerning the quantitative impact that different estimations of the mechanical properties of this settin ...

The paper presents an experimental and modelling approach for the soil water retention behaviour of two deformable soils. The objective is to investigate the physical mechanisms that govern the soil water retention properties and to propose a constitutive ...

Rainfall-induced landslides in volcanic ashes represent a major natural hazard in many regions around the world. Owing to their loose structure, volcanic ash slopes are prone to rainfall-induced landslides. The paper presents a continuum modelling approach ...

Experimental findings on the hysteresis of the soil water retention curve, relating the degree of saturation to the matric suction, have to be superimposed with the aspects due to the soil matrix deformation. In order to set a comprehensive model for the r ...

The study presents a comprehensive characterization of the fabric of bio-improved soils by introducing an image based quantitative analysis of the crystalline bond lattice, as a means of better understanding and interpreting the observed mechanical respons ...

The disposal of highly radioactive spent nuclear fuel in deep geological media will require excavating a large number of galleries in low-permeable rocks, altering initial rock integrity at the repository site. The FE-tunnel excavated in Opalinus Clay at t ...

Geomechanics is advancing our understanding of the multi-physical processes encountered in engineering practices involving energy storage and production and environmental protection for which the characterization of the behavior of relevant materials is es ...

Slow movements of natural slopes are quite frequent in mountainous or hilly areas. They may display occasional crises, mostly related to the increase of pore water pressures induced by exceptional climatic conditions. A methodology consisting of combining ...

This study proposes an analysis of the multiphysical phenomena and mechanisms governing the thermo-mechanical behaviour of energy piles. The analysis is based on the results of a series of full-scale in-situ tests, laboratory experiments and numerical anal ...

A geomechanical model was developed to analyse the behaviour of a natural slope located on the bank of the Rhine River between the towns of Stein and Mumpf in Switzerland. The slope is affected by a landslide and three strategic infrastructure assets are l ...
