A method that exploits an information theoretic framework to extract optimized audio features using video information is presented. A simple measure of mutual information (MI) between the resulting audio and video features allows the detection of the activ ...

The specific issue addressed in this paper is tailoring specific functionality to allow a group of teachers and students to carry out the learning process in Digital Signal and Image Processing in an electronic virtual environment that is meant to replace the physical class environment. In order such an environment to be performed, not only the course content itself but also different Web-based tools for interaction between the students and teachers are needed. A Graphical User Interface (GUI), designed and

In order to solve the bottleneck problem of region-based coding scheme, which is the contour coding, lossy methods are introduced in this paper for both 2D and 3D (2D plus time) contour image(s). A non-linear filter by means of majority operation is designed to act as contour simplification for both pre-processing and post-processing of contour coding. An average of 20% gain in contour coding cost is achieved by using this filter while the contour location error is controlled within one pixel width. Afterwa

Most of the multi-camera systems assume a well structured environment to detect and match objects across cameras. Cameras need to be fixed and calibrated. In this work, a novel system is presented to detect and match any objects in a network of uncalibrate ...

We present a generic video codec, which is able to compress image sequences efficiently regardless of their input formats. In addition, this codec supports a wide range of bit rates, without significant changes in its main architecture. A multiresolution representation of the data is generated by a Gabor-like wavelet transform. The motion estimation is performed by a locally adaptive multigrid block-matching technique. This codec can handle both interlaced and progressive input sequences, the temporal redun

The utilization of digital image sequences is becoming increasingly important in modern imaging applications, includingHDTV, interactive video, teleconferencing, telerobotics, and medical imaging. Due to the immense amountof data in image sequences, high compression coding methods are critical for efficient transmission and storage.Often, compression ratios exceeding 200:1 are required. Because these ratios are near the limits of conventionalcoding methods, we are investigating alternative methods which tak

We present a method that exploits an information theoretic framework to extract optimized audio features using the video information. A simple measure of mutual information (MI) between the resulting audio features and the video ones allows to detect the active speaker among different candidates. Our method involves the optimization of an MI-based objective function. No approximation is introduced to solve this optimization problem, neither concerning the estimation of the probability density functions (pdf

The Complete Calibration of the Colour-Redshift Relation survey (C3R2) is a spectroscopic e ffort involving ESO and Keck facilities designed specifically to empirically calibrate the galaxy colour-redshift relation - P(z jC) to the Euclid depth (iAB = 24 : ...

Background: Speaker detection is an important component of many human-computer interaction applications, like for example, multimedia indexing, or ambient intelligent systems. This work addresses the problem of detecting the current speaker in audio-visual ...

This paper proposes a rate-distortion optimal a posteriori quantization scheme for Matching Pursuit coefficients. The a posteriori quantization applies to a Matching Pursuit expansion that has been generated off-line, and cannot benefit of any feedback loop to the encoder in order to compensate for the quantization noise. The redundancy of the Matching Pursuit dictionary provides an indicator of the relative importance of coefficients and atom indices, and subsequently on the quantization error. It is used

An alternative technique for wavelet packet decomposition of signals is introduced. This technique allows a time- (space-) variant partitioning of the joint domain while being efficient in both computational performance and memory requirements. The proposed wavelet packet decomposition is then applied on two codecs based on motion compensated 2-D wavelet packet decomposition and 3-D wavelet packet decomposition with adaptive subband selection. The performances of these codes in terms of the quality of the r

This paper discusses the problems raised by the optimization of a mutual information-based objective function, in the context of a multimodal speaker detection. As no approximation is used, this function is highly nonlinear and plagued by numerous local minima. Three different optimization methods are compared. The Differential Evolution algorithm is deemed to be the best for the problem at hand and, consequently, is used to perform the speaker detection.

In this paper the problem of intensity inhomogeneity at high magnetic field on magnetic resonance images is addressed. Specifically, rat brain images at 9.4T acquired with a surface coil are bias corrected. We propose a low- pass frequency model that takes ...

A compression technique based on an expansion is presented. The elementary functions of the expansion form a class of pyramidal Gabor functions covering the frequency domain in octave bands. The image sequence is coded by differentially coding selected coefficients of this expansion. Simulation results show sequences reconstructed with good quality for a bit rate less than 64 Kbit/s.

We present a method that exploits an information theoretic framework to extract optimal audio features with respect to the video features. A simple measure of mutual information between the resulting audio features and the video ones allows to detect the active speaker among different candidates. The results show that our method is able to exploit the shared speech information contained in audio and video signals to recover their common source.

The Internet offers new and exciting possibilities for personalized and distance education. The Web Teaching project at ITS is creating the tools needed to provide complete high quality multimedia courses for delivery over the World Wide Web (WWW). Aside from the flexibility that Web-based education provides, the exploitation of ITS s experience in the area of image and signal processing offers the potential to fundamentally change the teaching process. This paper presents a system designed to perform multi

The authors describe a compact VLSI implementation of fast pipelined two-dimensional FIR filters. A polyphase architecture is presented. The filter bank makes special use of coefficients which are in powers-of-two. This leads to an interest scheme where only shift and add operations are compared. A novel design strategy has been used to speed up the algorithm, as well as a novel adder. Internally, the speed achieved is around 200 MHz
