With the increasing complexity of engineered systems, digital twins (DTs) have been widely used to support integrated modeling, simulation, and decision-making of the system of systems (SoS). However, when integrating DTs of each constituent system, it is ...

Chatter is a harmful self-excited vibration that commonly occurs during milling processes. Data -driven chatter detection and prediction is critical to achieve high surface quality and process efficiency. Most existing chatter detection approaches are base ...

Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) integrate heterogeneous systems and process sensor data using digital services. As the complexity of CPS increases, it becomes more challenging to efficiently formalize the integrated multidomain views with flexible automated ...

The design and management of complex products require engineers to synthesize vast amounts of information from disparate sources like design manuals, specification sheets, and technical reports. Manually constructing coherent and structured product information models is a primary bottleneck in the product development lifecycle. Product information modeling captures functional requirements, physical component hierarchies, interconnections, and critical parameters. This process is not only time-consuming and

Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is considered an important approach for understanding multidomain fields and is widely used in complex systems such as aerospace. In this article, a detailed survey of MBSE literature was conducted from its commenceme ...

The digital thread (DT), a new paradigm for the development of complex engineering systems, has garnered widespread attention in recent years. The DT serves as a key driver and game-changer for the digital transformation of engineering systems due to its a ...

In general, it is difficult to select a satisfactory product concept because the information in the early stage of design process is subjective, qualitative, and even uncertain to design engineers. The correlations among engineering characteristics for a p ...

During the design phase of an aircraft manufacturing system, different industrial scenarios need to be evaluated according to key performance indicators to achieve the optimal system performance. It is a highly complex process involving multidisciplinary s ...

An attempt is made to translate five generic key performance indicators (KPIs) into a continuous real-time cost function in a batch order-based manufacturing environment. The challenge of controlling and optimizing resource utilization, production efficien ...

As contemporary engineered systems become more interdependent, there is a growing need to manage their system complexity. However, system complexity only exists as implicit and heterogeneous information. This situation makes it difficult to obtain and anal ...

The paper describes a novel approach to product relationships management in the context of concurrent engineering and product lifecycle management (PLM). Current industrial practices in product data management and manufacturing process management systems r ...

As of today, to cope with traditional maintenance policies such as reactive and preventive maintenance, the manufacturing companies need the deployment of adaptive and responsive maintenance strategies. Meanwhile, the advent of Industry 4.0 leads the maint ...

The development of an aircraft industrial system is a complex process which faces the challenge of digital discontinuity in multidisciplinary engineering due to various interfaces between different digital tools, leading to extra development time and costs ...

Currently, the fundamental tenets of systems engineering are supported by a model-based approach to minimize risks and avoid design changes in late development stages. The models are used to formalize, analyze, design, optimize, and verify system developme ...

Metal Forming is a basic and essential industrial process to provide materials for constructing complex products. To design an efficient metal forming process, the functional requirements and operational performance are two important aspects to be consider ...

Ontology offers a formalized framework for knowledge representation and reasoning in complex systems, enabling the development of model-based systems engineering (MBSE). This study conducts a systematic bibliometric analysis of 566 papers on ontology in MBSE from 2008 to 2024, complemented by a qualitative literature review. The findings reveal a marked upward trajectory in research activities, characterized by small-scale collaboration networks predominantly led by core scholars. The research topics conver

Despite the high number of investments for data-based models in the expansion of Industry 4.0, too little effort has been made to ensure the maintenance of those models. In a data-streaming environment, data-based models are subject to concept drifts. A co ...

As business conditions change rapidly, the need for integrating business and technical systems calls for novel ICT frameworks and solutions to remain concurrent in highly competitive markets. A number of problems and issues arise in this regard. In this pa ...

Traditional inspection approaches often face challenges related to integration and interoperability across system boundaries. To overcome these issues, knowledge-based systems have increasingly been adopted for their ability to formalize domain expertise and support data-driven decision-making. However, a persistent gap remains between knowledge engineering and system modeling, which hinders information flow and semantic consistency throughout the system lifecycle. To bridge this gap, this study introduces

Process output and profitability of the operations are mainly determined by how the equipment is being used. The production planning, operations and machine maintenance influence the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) of the machinery, resulting in more ...
