The Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility will be equipped with one of the largest ECRH systems envisaged for fusion research. The system is organized in 4 clusters, each one composed of 8 gyrotrons fed in pairs by four main high voltage power supplies (MHVPS), with gyrotrons and MHVPS arranged on two separate floors of a new dedicated building. Since gyrotron specifications are similar to those of ITER, a joint procurement procedure was made between Fusion for Energy and DTT. The first DTT pre-series gyrotr

The Closure Plate Sub-Plate (CPSP), which defines the border between ex-vessel and in-vessel components of the Electron Cyclotron Upper Launcher (EC UL), bundles the waveguides into a sub-assembly which can be manipulated separately from the UL Port Plug ( ...

An overview of recent results obtained at the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) is given. A work flow for predictive profile modelling of AUG discharges was established which is able to reproduce experimental H-mode plasma profiles based on engineering parameter ...

Turbulence and Transport Reduction with Negative Triangularity : Correlation ECE Measurements in TCV Due to turbulence, core energy transport in fusion devices such as tokamaks generally exceeds collisional transport by at least an order of magnitude. It is therefore crucial to understand the instabilities driving the turbulent state and to find ways to control them. Plasma shape is one of these fundamental tools. In low collisionality plasmas, such as in a reactor, changing the plasma shape from Dee-shape

After a 26-month vent ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) went back in operation with a newly designed upper W-divertor suitable for alternative divertor configurations (featuring in-vessel coils and cryo-pump). Parameter scans and an extensive set of measurements were obtained and their interpretation is ongoing. Prompted by the ITER wall change, dedicated experiments on non-boronized plasma startup were contrasted to that employing asymmetric and more symmetric boronizations. The asymmetric boronization proved to be as b

Localized electron heating and current drive, like those produced by electron cyclotron heating (ECH) systems, are powerful tools for controlling the sawtooth period. They allow the direct modification of the plasma parameters which determine the sawtooth stability. In this paper we report a set of new experimental results obtained in the TokamakConfiguration Variable (TCV) and a set of related simulations obtained applying a sawtooth period model in a transport code. The TCV device, equipped with a very fl

The additional power absorbed by the plasma can be determined from the time derivative of the total plasma energy, which can be estimated from the diamagnetic flux of the plasma using a diamagnetic loop. The main difficulty in using diamagnetic measurements to estimate the kinetic energy is the compensation of the flux measurement sensitivity to poloidal magnetic fields, which is not always easy to adjust. A method based on the temporal variations of the diamagnetic flux of the plasma during modulated elect

Electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostics on Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV) allow study of the electron temperature evolution in time with good spatial and temporal resolution at the high field side and low field side at various lines of sight. ...

The mm-wave power exiting the eight In-Vessel waveguides inside the ITER Electron Cyclotron Upper Launcher is reflected by three fixed mirror sets and finally aimed by two independent steering mirrors to specific plasma locations. A design solution for bot ...

Electron cyclotron (EC) emission (ECE) radiometers viewing perpendicular to the magnetic field are common on nearly all tokamaks for measuring the electron temperature with good spatio-temporal resolution. Two such radiometers are installed on TCV, one loo ...

The TCV tokamak contributes to physics understanding in fusion reactor research by a wide set of experimental tools, like flexible shaping and high power ECRH. A 1MW, 25 keV deuterium heating neutral beam (NB) has been installed in 2015 and it was operated ...

An over-moded evacuated waveguide line was chosen for use in the transmission system for the proposed JET enhanced performance project (JET-EP) electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) system. A comparison between the quasi-optical, atmospheric waveguide and evacuated waveguide systems was performed for the project with a strong emphasis placed on the technical and financial aspects. The evacuated waveguide line was chosen as the optimal system in light of the above criteria. The system includes six line

Progress in the area of MHD stability and disruptions, since the publication of the 1999 ITER Physics Basis document (1999 Nucl. Fusion 39 2137-2664), is reviewed. Recent theoretical and experimental research has made important advances in both understandi ...

The Advanced Tokamak scenario, one of the modes of operation being considered for ITER, relies on the attainment of a high bootstrap current fraction. This scenario is typically characterized by an internal transport barrier (ITB). An internal feedback loop then governs the current profile, which strongly affects the confinement and thus the properties and location of the high-gradient region, where in turn the bootstrap current component is localized. The bootstrap current fraction can reach 100% only if t

Electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) of high-density tokamak plasmas is limited because of reflections of the waves at so-called wave cutoffs. Electron Bernstein wave (EBW) heating (EBWH) via a double mode conversion process from ordinary (O)-mode, ...

Different types of central relaxation oscillations are observed in the presence of ECH depending on the location of the deposited power. In the TCV tokamak, normal sawteeth, i.e. triangular sawteeth similar to ohmic sawteeth, and saturated sawteeth are observed with central ECH power deposition, while giant sawteeth and 'humpback' oscillations occur when heating close to the sawtooth inversion surface of the local soft X ray emissivity. New measurements with high temporal resolution show that the crash phas

The Alfvén instability nonlinearly excited the energetic-particle-driven geodesic acoustic mode on the ASDEX-Upgrade tokamak, as demonstrated experimentally. The mechanism of the energetic-particle-driven geodesic acoustic mode excitation and the mode nonl ...

The EC-system of the TCV tokamak is progressively being upgraded with the addition of two MW-class dual-frequency gyrotrons (84 and 126 GHz/2s/1MW). In order to connect the two gyrotrons to the existing low field side and top launchers, new waveguide routi ...

The electron cyclotron (EC) heating & current drive (H&CD) system on ITER provides plasma heating by generating, transmitting, and launching high-intensity, high-frequency (170 GHz) electromagnetic wave energy steerable across the plasma cross-section. The ...

In this chapter, we review the progress in MHD stability, disruptions and control in magnetic fusion research that has occurred over the past (more than) one and a half decades since the publication by Hender et al in 2007 on the same topic as part of the update of ITER Physics Basis. During this period, remarkable progress has been achieved in the understanding of the basic physics and overall control of MHD instabilities through a wide spectrum of dedicated experiments, theory and modeling. The sawtooth a
