In recent decades, we have witnessed great advances on the Internet of Things, mobile devices, sensor-based systems, and resulting big data infrastructures, which have gradually, yet fundamentally influenced the way people interact with and in the digital ...

Urban form matters in assessing the energy consumption of buildings. This chapter introduces three useful tools to assess the environmental impact of the urban form and to define possible energy scenarios. These outcomes can be used to inform the redevelopment or the new design of urban districts, or simply to evaluate the overall energy performance of different urban fabrics. The tools presented comprise: a) simplified indicators of energy-dependent variables based on morphological information of the urban

We present a novel method for building a multiresolution representation of large digital surface models. The surface points coincide with the nodes of a planar graph which can be processed using a critically sampled, invertible lifting scheme. To drive the ...

In order to support a more effective and environmentally aware resource management, information systems may be designed to integrate relevant information and indicators about the resource and its environment and to make them available to all stakeholders a ...

The aim of this article is to present a method to calculate the morphological properties of the built environment using LiDAR (light-detection and ranging) data, geographic information systems (GIS) data and three-dimensional (3D) models of cities as a sou ...

In Havana, transport is blamed as a likely source of pollution issues. which is usually supported on arguments referring to a vehicle fleet mainly made of old cars (i.e., most models are American from the 1950s or Russian from the 1980s) with poor technica ...

The neighbourhood unit is used extensively across numerous disciplines to empirically measure various urban characteristics and phenomena. Spatially heterogeneous system variables-e.g., environmental, sociodemographic, infrastructural etc.-create distinct ...

The physical characteristics of an urban system are typically heterogeneously expressed, creating distinct neighbourhoods shaped by specific local features. Hence, spatially explicit expression of sustainability across the urban system is expected and shou ...

In this paper, we propose a methodology for the estimation of the pose of oblique landscape images. Knowledge about the pose is needed for using such images in augmented reality applications or to allow projection of pixels in a GIS for spatial analysis. W ...

In this paper we present an application of GIS and airborne light detection and ranging (LIDAR) data analysis for computation of morphological properties of buildings' descriptors in the context of an urban morphogenesis geo-simulator. The morphological de ...

In this paper we propose a framework that characterizes user interaction with webGIS. Furthermore we present a technique to remotely test and evaluate such systems. Our framework does not only include parameters describing the usability of a system, but re ...

We propose a robust method for registering high oblique images of landscapes. Typically, an input image can be registered by matching it against a set of registered images of the same location. While this has been shown to work very well for images of popu ...

This paper describes the usability evaluation of a WebGIS. The system under evaluation has been developed for a real-world community in the Swiss canton de Vaud, namely for two people who are involved in wine making. The system's usability is tested with users from this community. The goal of the study is to validate hypotheses and answer research questions focusing on users'performance and specific factors that influence user's performance, such as experience and training or particular interface features.

Recent scientific and technological advancements have transformed the knowledge frontiers, giving rise to the next wave of disruptive technologies with deep impacts on urban society. An Urban Digital Twin (UDT) is a technology with great potential to trans ...

This diploma thesis describes the development of an interactive spatial service for the winegrowers in the Swiss canton de Vaud. The users can consult an interactive map containing different themes important for the wine-cultivation. Further the winegrowers can define their parcels of land with a specific grape-sort in the system and add important meta-data to the parcel. The system is developed according to Human-computer-interaction methods and theories.

This study investigated the distribution of the fraction of rainfall intercepted by the facades of buildings located in an urbanized area. We used the frequently used semi-empirical standard ISO-15927-3 to simulate Wind-Driven Rain on facades. The implemen ...

Palestinians living in the West Bank, a territory occupied by the State of Israel according to International Law, face deprived access to land and a limited ability to move freely which pertains to the presence of Israeli settlements and other infrastructure (closures, restricted or forbidden roads, etc.) This confinement has significant impacts on their economic and social livehoods, and it is even worsenig with the on-going construction of a 709 km long Barrier which mainly runs inside the West Bank. With

This paper describes a framework of methods for the measurement and evaluation of users' performance in interaction with a web-GIS. The framework involves testing of a system with real-world users, streaming of the user's screen during the evaluation and t ...

Les outils de modélisation et de visualisation 3D sont aujourd'hui encore dominés par ce que la technologie peut offrir: l'importance donnée à la représentation des objets est prépondérante. D'un autre côté, très peu d'attention est donnée à la meilleure f ...
