Background, aim and scope. Regional specificities are a key factor when analyzing the environmental impact of a biofuel pathway through a life cycle assessment (LCA). Due to different energy mixes, transport distances, agricultural practices and land use c ...

The gut microbiome, often referred to as "super organ", comprises up to a hundred trillion microorganisms, and the species diversity may vary from person to person. They perform a decisive role in diverse biological functions related to metabolism, immunit ...

Environmental pollutants including emerging contaminants are a growing concern worldwide. Organic wastes, such as food waste, compost, animal manure, crop residues, and sludge are generally used as feedstock. The conventional treatment methodologies (prima ...

The interest in developing biofuels has rapidly increased during the last decades followed by a strong controversy about their sustainability. Diverting a large amount of land from agriculture to fuels, impacting forests and grasslands, loss of biodiversity due to large monocropped fields are some threats that inhibit the momentum towards a significant substitution of fossil fuels by biofuels. From a methodological point of view, several estimations of the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from bi

In recent times, demand for energy has significantly increased due to the depletion of fossil fuels and the fast-industrial revolution. This has created a wide space for the development of sustainable and renewable energy sources. Biodiesel has attained ex ...

Majority of industries, in order to meet the technological development and consumer demands generate waste. The untreated waste spreads out toxic and harmful substances in the environment which serves as a breeding ground for pathogenic microorganisms thus ...

Lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks are considered as one of the major alternative for fossil and food based transport fuel and chemicals for the reasons such as fuel/food security, depleting fossil reserves, climate change, mitigate pollution in agriculture and rural socio-economic development. In highly populated and agriculture based countries such as India, the conventional lignocellulosic feedstock such as rice straw and wheat straw are a major source for animal feed and hence non-conventional feedstock

Grape pomace is a high quality biodegradable residue of the winery industry. It is comprised of grape seed, skin and stalks, and is blessed with substantial quantities of phenols, flavonoids and anthocyanins with high antioxidant potential. Currently, ther ...

The promotion of biofuels as energy for transportation in the industrialized countries is mainly driven by the perspective of oil depletion, the concerns about energy security and global warming. However due to sustainability constraints, biofuels will rep ...

Refining Biomass Residues for Sustainable Energy and Bioproducts: Technology, Advances, Life Cycle Assessment and Economics is a one-stop reference on the biorefinery of various kinds of residue and waste feedstock for the sustainable production of biofuels and biochemicals. Written by a team of global experts, this book introduces the concept of integrated biorefinery systems for waste management, as well as their operation and feedstock sourcing. It explores the specificities, current developments and pot

Grape pomace (GP) is a low-value by-product that contains a significant amount of high value-added products. The huge amount of non-edible residues of GP wastes (seeds, skins, leaves and, stems) pro-duced by wine industries causes & rsquo; environmental po ...

The energy demand is increasing as well as the GHG emissions and the fossil fuels depletion. Public awareness on this topic significantly raised up in last decades. Nowadays conversion of residual biomasses in energy represents a real opportunity. However, the sustainability of such fuels has to be proven: Life Cycle Assessment is usually used for that purpose. Because of the increasing natural gas demand, scientists are searching for new gasification techniques and among them the hydrothermal gasification

Lignocellulosic ethanol is expected to be commercialised during the next decade as renewable energy for transport. Competiveness with first generation bioethanol and with gasoline is commonly considered in techno-economic analyses for commercial stage. Sev ...

Biofuels production from agriculture residues is gaining much attention in Brazil due to agriculture residue availability, environmental benign properties of the fuel and, the capacity to improve rural development. However, for consideration of rational us ...

Bioethanol and biochemicals from agriculture residues are key alternative for transport fuels and fossil chemicals to environmental impact mitigation and rural economy. In biofuels and biochemicals production, pretreatment is the crucial and energy demandi ...

Estimating greenhouse gas (GHG) balances of biofuels is subject to significant biases stemming from modelling choices about system definition and boundaries, functional unit, reference systems and allocation methods. This paper investigates extent to which ...

A novel microwave assisted surfactant pretreatment strategy was evaluated for the production of bioethanol and biopolymer from chili post-harvest residue. Among the various surfactants screened microwave assisted Tween - 20 pretreatment was found to be mor ...

In recent years, the recovery of valuable compounds from food waste like grape pomace is an emerging issue in the food sector. Grape pomace or marc can be considered as an important solid waste that is produced from the wine industries after the pressing a ...

The IPCC Report (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2007) raises serious concerns about the increase of extreme weather events (storms, rains, snowfalls). Over the past 100 years the average global temperature has risen by around 0.75°C and the sea level increases by 3 millimetres a year. There is a consensus on the impact of this climate change phenomena on the planning and operation of the electric power systems: winds are growing in strength, resulting in a greater frequency of operations interrup

The availability of about 18 million hectares of grassland in Para State, Brazil, and the possibility of increasing the livestock density display a good perspective for the oil palm expansion in pasture land. A life cycle assessment is performed for a pros ...
