Driven by applications using herringbone grooved bearings lubricated with a gas operating under conditions where the perfect gas assumption is not valid, the real gas effect has been introduced into the existing narrow groove theory. The enhanced model has ...

The aim of this project was to develop and implement an optimisation methodology that combines process thermo-modelling and process integration in a thermo-economic optimisation framework for fuel cells systems. During this project, a generic software has been developed to perform optimisation of integated energy systems. OSMOSE stands for “OptimiSation MultiObjectif de Systemes Energétiques intégrés” (MultiObjective Optimisation of Integrated Energy Systems). The developed approach and software have been u

Solar thermal power plants have a large potential, particularly in the sun belt countries around the world. The objectives of this study are to identify the heliostat fields for solar tower plants with the lowest specific energy cost and to investigate the ...

The main driver for small scale turbomachinery in domestic heat pumps is the potential for reaching higher efficiencies than volumetric compressors currently used and the potential for making the compressor oil-free, bearing a considerable advantage in the ...

Three labs at EPFL which are bound through CRETE (Centre de Recherche et d’Enseignement en Technologies Energétiques) have oriented some of their research activities on integrated fuel cells equipment. Technological and systemic optimisation research programs are currently under way, mainly in the field of electro-chemical materials, of systemic approach, and in the field of optimising the static conversion system for injection in an electrical network. Efficiency calculations and comparisons are given.

District energy systems have the potential to decrease the CO2 emissions linked to energy services (heating, hot water, cooling and electricity), thanks to the implementation of large polygeneration energy conversion technologies, connected to a group of b ...

A numerical model for a prechamber autoignition gas engine under development has been established based on an experimental test case. With a simplified finiterate/ eddy-dissipation model for the combustion of natural gas, it was possible to properly reprod ...

Flow pattern data for horizontal intube flow boiling are presented for refrigerants R-134a and R-402 (60/2/38). The flow pattern observations were compared with various criteria for determining whether the entire circumference of a horizontal evaporator tube is wet or only partially wet, an important aspect of predicting flow boiling heat transfer coefficients. Use of only the liquid Froude number FrL (utilized by numerous flow boiling correlations) is shown to be too simplistic and not reliable. A new semi

Natural Gas is one of the few truly viable alernatives to liquid fuels which does not significantly alter the user’s perception of the vehicle. Natural gas has several major advantages, particularly in terms of environmental impact however a number of obstacles need to be overcome before large scale implementation of natural gas can be envisaged. This paper addresses the technical issues facing the fledgling Swiss natural gas industry and the efforts of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EP

Background: The electricity production market benefits from combined cycles with their high efficiency. In the lower power range, Fuel Cells are a good candidate to combine with gas turbines. Such systems can achieve efficiencies of 60% and more.

In 2010, an ambitious collaboration between academia and industry was launched as a part of the EU FP7 project LOVE, with the aim to investigate the generation of electricity by recovering waste heat at temperatures below 120°C, focussing on the cement sector as test case. We look at the key lessons learned from this period.

Following the pioneering work of the AGS Tokyo half project, a geographical information system has been developed to model the energy requirements of an urban area. The purpose of the platform is to model with sufficient detail the energy services requirem ...
