A high vacuum and high temperature compatible viewing dump, made of MACOR, was designed and installed in TCV for Vertical ECE experiments in the 75-110 GHz frequency range. Measurements of the dump prior to installation in the tokamak showed in more than 9 ...

A set of experiments was carried out in JET ILW (Joint European Torus with ITER-Like Wall) L-mode plasmas in order to study the effects of light impurities on core ion thermal transport. N was puffed into some discharges and its profile was measured by act ...

The physics of supra thermal test ions in turbulent plasmas can be conveniently studied in basic plasma physics devices, which allow high-resolution measurements of plasma and fast ion parameters and wave fields throughout the whole plasma cross-section. We describe recent advances in the development of an experimental setup consisting of a non-perturbative Li 6+ miniaturized ion source and a detector for the investigation of the interaction between supra thermal ions and drift/interchange–driven turbulence

Nuclear fusion using magnetic confinement, in particular in the tokamak configuration, is a promising path towards sustainable energy. A core challenge is to shape and maintain a high-temperature plasma within the tokamak vessel. This requires high-dimensi ...

The stability properties of Alfvén Eigenmodes (AEs) are investigated directly using external antenna excitation and detection of stable modes in a variety of plasma configurations in different devices. Dedicated methods to measure the AE damping rate separ ...

Turbulent fast ion transport has been investigated in astrophisycal, laboratory and fusion plasmas. When gyro- and drift-averaging across plasma structures manifest as non-markovian and non-local effects, this results in generally non-diffusive transport. ...

All major JET systems have been fully commissioned for D-T and the DTE1 series of experiments has started with the D-T fuel mixture and operating conditions foreseen for ITER. In the area of ITER physics, significant results have been produced in both D-D and D-T. In D-D, the LH threshold power database has been extended, the bounds on edge-electron temperature and density in ELMy H-modes have been defined and the advantages of Types I and III ELMy discharges have been compared. In D-T plasmas, the isotope

The First Mirror Test for ITER has been carried out in JET with mirrors exposed during: (i) the third ILW campaign (ILW-3, 2015-2016, 23.33 h plasma) and (ii) all three campaigns, i.e. ILW-1 to ILW-3: 2011-2016, 63,52 h in total. All mirrors from main cham ...

The onset of chaotic ion dynamics in electrostatic waves is investigated in a linear magnetized plasma. The existence of a threshold for heating in agreement with the predictions of single particle Hamiltonian theories and the fast time scale for velocity space diffusion are observed in the experiment. Measurements of test-particle dynamics indicate an exponential separation of initially close ion trajectories for amplitudes above the heating threshold. Ion orbits in the different wave-particle interaction

In this paper we have investigated the effect of reversing the direction of the magnetic field and plasma current, hence the ion del B-drift direction, on the instability threshold of toroidal Alfven eigenmodes with toroidal mode number (n) in the range ve ...

The collisionless plasma of the Versatile Toroidal Facility experiment [J. Egedal, A. Fasoli, M. Porkolab, and D. Tarkowski, Rev. Sci. Instrum. 71, 3351 (2000)], applied to the study of magnetic reconnection, exhibits a global eigenmode response during whi ...

The interaction of Alfven eigenmodes (AEs) and energetic particles is one of many important factors determining the success of future tokamaks. In JET, eight in-vessel antennas were installed to actively probe stable AEs with frequencies ranging 25-250 kHz ...

A specific experimental apparatus consisting of an ion source and a detector for the investigation of the interaction between supra-thermal ions and drift-wave turbulence is developed on the TORoidal Plasma Experiment (TORPEX). Due to the small plasma temperature (~5eV), a spatially localized, small-size ion source (~4cm) mounted inside the vacuum vessel, with relatively low ion energy (~100eV-1keV) can be used. The source consists of an aluminosilicate Li-6 ion emitter (6 mm diameter, 10-30μA current) in

TORPEX is a basic plasma physics toroidal device located at the CRPP-EPFL in Lausanne. In TORPEX, a vertical magnetic field superposed on a toroidal field creates helicoidal field lines with both ends terminating on the torus vessel. We review recent advances in the understanding and control of electrostatic interchange turbulence, associated structures and their effect on suprathermal ions. These advances are obtained using high-resolution diagnostics of plasma parameters and wave fields throughout the who

Particle transport in tokamak plasmas has been intensively studied in the past, particularly in relation to density peaking and the presence of anomalous inward particle convection in L-and H-modes. While in the L-mode case the presence of the anomalous in ...

Results from the first experiments to drive Alfven Eigenmodes (AEs) with antennas external to a tokamak plasma are presented. In ohmically heated plasma discharges, direct experimental measurements of the damping of toroidicity induced AEs (TAEs) have allowed an identification of different regimes corresponding to different dominant TAE absorption mechanisms with a wide range of damping rates, 10(-3) less than or equal to gamma/omega less than or equal to 10(-1). In plasmas heated by ion cyclotron resonance

TORPEX [A. Fasoli, B. Labit, M. McGrath, S. H. Muller, M. Podesta, and F. M. Poli, Bull. Am. Phys. Soc. 48, 119 (2003)] is dedicated to the study of electrostatic instabilities, turbulence, and transport. Plasmas are produced by waves in the electron cyclo ...

This paper reports the first quantitative analysis of the measurements of the damping rate (gamma/omega) for stable Alfvén Eigenmodes (AEs) with toroidal mode number (n) in the range |n|=3-15 as function of the edge plasma elongation (kappa95). We find tha ...

Low frequency electrostatic instabilities are investigated on TORPEX [Fasoli, Labit, McGrath, Muller, Podesta, and Poli, Bull. Am. Phys. Soc. 48, 119 (2003)], a toroidal device for basic plasma physics experiments with a toroidal magnetic field 100 mT and ...

Electron cyclotron emission (ECE) measurements are an important component of the diagnostic suite on the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV) [F. Hoffman , Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 36, B277 (1994)]. A recently installed, 24-channel dual-conversion ...
