A fundamental task in reputation systems is to aggregate multiple feedback ratings into a single value that can be used to compare the reputation of different entities. Feedback is most commonly aggregated using the arithmetic mean. However, the mean is qu ...

Monitoring and managing urban air pollution is a significant challenge for the sustainability of our environment. We quickly survey the air pollution modeling problem, introduce a new dataset of mobile air quality measurements in Zurich, and discuss the ch ...

In many situations, agents optimize their own operations locally but their local problems are interdependent. We consider the problem of coordinating these local problems to find a globally optimal solution. We model the coordination problem as a Distribut ...

There are many scenarios where we would like agents to report their observations or expertise in a truthful way. Game-theoretic principles can be used to provide incentives to do so. I survey several approaches to eliciting truthful information, in particu ...

Methods of inferring user preferences using ontologies use ontology structure based similarity and an inference mechanism in defining ontology filtering (OF). Items are recommended to users by identifying items that the users may prefer, but may not have b ...

"Smart Cities" brauchen als Grundlage für Entscheidungen grosse Mengen von Daten, die häufig nicht direkt, sondern über andere Agenten erhoben werden. Es ist daher wichtig, die Qualität durch geeignete Anreize oder Kontrolle sicherzustellen. Bei Ausnutzung ...

This invention relates to the field of multi-objective workflow optimization. Certain exemplary embodiments of the invention are applicable in cases where workflow descriptions contain choice variables relating for instance to the selection of a specific s ...

We present the Personalized News (PEN) recommender systems framework, currently in use by a newspaper website to evaluate various algorithms for news recommendations. We briefly describe its system architecture and related components. We show how a researc ...

We consider interactive tools that help users search for their most preferred item in a large collection of options. In particular, we examine example-critiquing, a technique for enabling users to incrementally construct preference models by critiquing exa ...

Today, recommender systems are an inevitable part of everyone's daily digital routine and are present on most internet platforms. State-of-the-art deep learning-based models require a large number of data to achieve their best performance. Many datasets fu ...

We report on the live evaluation of various news recom- mender systems conducted on the website swissinfo.ch. We demonstrate that there is a major diffierence between offine and online accuracy evaluations. In an offine setting, rec- ommending most popular stories is the best strategy, while in a live environment this strategy is the poorest. For online setting, context-tree recommender systems which profile the users in real-time improve the click-through rate by up to 35%. The visit length also increases
