In many tokamaks ferromagnetic material, usually referred to as an iron-core, is present in order to improve the magnetic coupling between the solenoid and the plasma. The presence of the iron core in proximity to the plasma changes the magnetic topology w ...

Waves in the Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies (ICRF) enhance local Plasma-Surface Interactions (PSI) near the wave launchers and magnetically-connected objects via Radio-Frequency (RF) sheath rectification. ITER will use 20MW of ICRF power over long puls ...

First of a kind SOLPS-ITER simulations on tokamak a configuration variable (TCV) that include nitrogen have been performed to model recent nitrogen seeded detachment experiments. Based on spectroscopic measurements, a nitrogen recycling coefficient R-p(N) ...

Most of the detachment experiments done to date on the tokamak a configuration variable (TCV), both in standard and alternative divertor geometries, focused on L-mode integrated core density ramps. In view of extending these studies to high-power, high-con ...

Fast ions in fusion plasmas often leave characteristic signatures in the neutron emission from the plasma. In this paper, we show how neutron measurements can be used to study fast ions and give examples of physics results obtained on present day tokamaks. ...

The prediction of plasma rotation is of high interest for fusion research due to the effects of the rotation upon magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities, impurities, and turbulent transport in general. In this work, an analysis method was studied and vali ...

Inconel-600 blocks and stainless steel covers for quartz microbalance crystals from remote corners in the JET-ILW divertor were studied with time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis and nuclear reaction analysis to obtain information about the area ...

A new DT campaign (DTE2) is planned at JET in 2020 to minimize the risks of ITER operations. In view of DT operations, a calibration of the JET neutron monitors at 14 MeV neutron energy has been performed using a well calibrated 14 MeV neutron generator (N ...

Preliminary results investigating the microstructure, bonding and effect of beryllium oxide formation on retention in the JET ITER-like wall beryllium tiles, are presented. The tiles have been investigated by several techniques: Scanning Electron Microscop ...

The original TCV control system was designed in the late 1980s to be inherently network based in that all control operations were performed from X-windows terminals and the control computers were networked. Using VMS-VAX technology, the acquisition system (CAMAC) and control system (BITBUS) were connected to controllers situated in the machine bus of these machines that were linked homogeneously by the VMS 'cluster' technology. Although the computing power and network bandwidth have improved considerably ov

Experiments at JET showed locally enhanced, asymmetric beryllium (Be) erosion at outer wall limiters when magnetically connected ICRH antennas were in operation. A first modeling effort using the 3D erosion and scrape-off layer impurity transport modeling ...

The x-ray transitions in Cu- and Ni-like tungsten ions in the 5.19-5.26 angstrom wavelength range that are relevant as a high-temperature tokamak diagnostic, in particular for JET in the ITER-like wall configuration, have been studied. Tungsten spectra wer ...

Multi-spectral imaging of helium atomic emission (HeMSI) has been used to create 2D poloidal maps of T-e and ne in TCV's divertor. To achieve these measurements, TCV's MANTIS multispectral cameras (Perek et al 2019 Rev. Sci. Instrum. 90 123514) simultaneou ...

Synchrotron radiation observed in a quiescent Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV) runaway discharge is studied using filtered camera images targeting three distinct wavelength intervals. Through the tomographic simultaneous algebraic reconstruction tech ...

The snowflake (SF) magnetic configuration is investigated as a potential power exhaust solution for a fusion reactor, but also to improve our understanding of divertor physics in general. Unlike a conventional single null (SN), it features an additional ne ...

TCV is a medium sized tokamak equipped with a large suite of plasma diagnostics, a versatile array of poloidal shaping coils, an electron cyclotron heating system, and a two source neutral beam injection (NBI) system. The NBI system is capable of a simultaneous injection of energetic neutrals in the co-and counter-current directions. The resulting fast ion (FI) populations are used to study a multitude of FI-driven instabilities. While plasma instabilities in the below 1 MHz frequency range can be observed

The first toroidal rotation measurements in TCV ohmic L-mode plasmas with no external momentum injection are presented. The toroidal velocity profile of the fully stripped carbon species is measured by active Charge eXchange Recombination Spectroscopy with ...

Tokamak operation with W PFCs is associated with specific challenges for impurity control, which may be particularly demanding in the transition from stationary H-mode to L-mode. To address W control issues in this phase, dedicated experiments have been pe ...

Detachment, an important mechanism for reducing target heat deposition, is achieved through reductions in power, particle and momentum; which are induced through plasma-atom and plasma-molecule interactions. Experimental research in how those reactions pre ...

Using recently installed scrape-off layer diagnostics on the tokamak a configuration variable, we characterise the poloidal and parallel properties of turbulent filaments. We access both attached and detached divertor conditions across a wide range of core ...
