Traditional large-eddy simulation (LES) provides good results on standard benchmark turbulent flows, but engineering applications involving more complex geometries are restricted. This is mainly due to the physical hypotheses of homogeneity, isotropy, or local equilibrium of the subgrid-scale (SGS) models, which are questionable in more realistic configurations. It appears essential to qualify the built-in filters of LES models before performing coarse mesh/high Reynolds number computations. A study of the

A methodology is presented for the formulation of an algebraic extra-stress model derivable from the Oldroyd-B constitutive equation for a viscoelastic fluid. An implicit algebraic tensor relation is derived directly from the differential constitutive relation by involving a slow variation condition on the evolution of the deviatoric part of the extra-stress tensor. An explicit solution to this algebraic constitutive equation is then obtained using representation bases developed previously for the turbulent

High-performance parallel computer systems have been employed to compute a variety of three-dimensional incompressible fluid flows. Three different numerical methods have been used for the discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations, with domain decomposition techniques employed for the parallel resolution of the discretized equations. These parallel flow solvers have been applied to the numerical simulation of different flows, ranging from basic flow studies to industrial applications. The results of the

An algorithm for the simulation of unsteady, viscous, stratified compressible flows, which remains valid at all speeds, is presented. The method is second-order accurate in both space and time and is independent of the Mach number. In order to remove the stiffness of the numerical problem due to the large disparity between the flow speed and the acoustic wave speed at low Mach number, an approximate Newton method, based on artificial compressibility, is proposed. Additionally, a modified advection upstream

The method of invariant manifold is developed for a derivation of reduced description in kinetic equations of dilute polymeric solutions. It is demonstrated that this reduced description becomes universal in the limit of small Deborah and Weissenberg numbers, and it is represented by the (revised) Oldroyd 8 constants constitutive equation for the polymeric stress tensor. Coefficients of this constitutive equation are expressed in terms of the microscopic parameters. A. systematic procedure of corrections to

This paper presents the application of spectral element methods to simulate the time-dependent flow of viscoelastic fluids in non-trivial geometries using a closed-form differential constitutive equation. As an example, results relative to the flow of a FENE-CR fluid in a two-dimensional four-to-one contraction are given.

The purpose of the present numerical method is to simulate the flow in between two concentric cylinders of finite axial length. The numerical integration of the transient three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is performed by a Legendre spectral element method in space while the time marching scheme is fully explicit. By taking full advantage of the tensor product bases, it is possible to set up fast diagonalization techniques in order to speed up the solver. Numerical results are compared

We consider the Rosenbrock methods, namely a family of methods for Differential Algebraic Equations, for the solution of the unsteady three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. These multistage schemes are attractive for non-linear problems because they ac ...

In 2009, l’Hydroptère broke the symbolic barrier of 50 knots and became the world fastest sailing boat over both 500 meters and 1 nautical mile. This major achievement relied on the high skills of the sailing team but also on technical advances of the boat, resulting from long years of studies and development. This achievement is also an open window to a new goal: flying around the world. In the present article, we present this long and incredible story, highlighting the different steps, the technology invo

This paper describes an iterative solution technique for partial differential equations involving the grad(div) operator, based on a domain decomposition. Iterations are performed to solve the solution on the interface. We identify the transmission relatio ...

An interpretation to the use of deconvolution models when used in implicitly filtered large-eddy simulations as a way to approximate the projective grid filter is given. Consequently, a new category of subgrid models, the grid filter models, is defined. This approach gives a theoretical justification to the use of deconvolution models without explicit filtering of the solution and explains how the use of such models can be effective in this context.

This paper presents the large-eddy simulation of the lid-driven cubic cavity flow by the spectral element method (SEM) using the dynamic model. Two spectral filtering techniques suitable for these simulations have been implemented. Numerical results for Re ...
