This paper shows that the instabilities which are observed in cells cannot be explained by supposing that the mechanical and electromagnetic fields are independent of the space variable x3 corresponding to the length of the cell. For a model which is infinitely long in the x3-direction, we prove in particular that the kinetic energy due to the x1- and x2-components of the velocities tends to zero as the time tends to infinity.

Motivated by an industrial project concerning the electrolysis cells for the production of aluminium, we study the asymptotic behaviour of ferromagnetic plates first when the magnetic susceptibility is large and then when the thickness of the plates is small. (C) Elsevier, Paris.

Three different existing steady-state models with quantum correction for simulating the resonant tunnelling diode are summarized. Numerical methods and a theoretical argument for one of the models are briefly described. Results of simulation axe focused on the capability of reproducing the negative differential resistivity.

We consider the bidimensional magnetic shaping problem without surface tension and study its stability when the boundary GAMMA of the domain has cusp points. We show in particular that one has stability when the curvature of the smooth parts of GAMMA is negative.

At the request of the Director of the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne, Professor Blanc (1910–2006) initiated an ambitious programme in applied mathematics: new courses, the creation of an institute for research, and an orientation towards economics. With the acquisition of a computer in 1958, he promoted numerical analysis, computer science and operational research. When the school received a federal status in 1969, he took this opportunity to endow it with a department of mathematics dedicated to ap

Assuming a vanishing surface tension, we show that no smooth simply connected equilibrium configuration is stable. The disks are however almost stable.

In this article, we investigate the equations of magnetostatics for a configuration where a ferromagnetic material occupies a bounded domain and is surrounded by vacuum. Furthermore, the ferromagnetic law takes the form ...
