The paper reports on a nonlinear frequency up-converting vibration energy harvester with enhanced broadband performance below 50 Hz, which is attained by leveraging vibro-impact interaction between two high-frequency piezoelectric generators and two low-fr ...

The time-dependent behavior of sensor systems based on enzyme membranes is treated theoretically. The comparative treatment covers traditional potentiometric and amperometric enzyme electrodes as well as enzyme reactors. Theoretical solutions are derived by the method of Laplace transforms. The relationships refer to the analytically useful range of relatively low substrate concentrations where the response signal is a function of the sample concentration. Numerical simulations using finite-difference proce

In this paper we present two compact, quantum cascade laser absorption spectroscopy based, sensors developed for trace substance detection in gases and liquids. The gas sensor, in its most integrated version, represents the first system combining a quantum cascade laser and a quantum cascade detector. Furthermore, it uses a toroidal mirror cell with a volume of only 40 cm(3) for a path length of up to 4 m. The analytical performance is assessed by the measurements of isotope ratios of CO2 at ambient abundan

In recent years there has been a strong effort to reduce the size and power consumption of vapour cell atomic clocks [1,2]. The progress in this direction is driven by several factors such as the use low power laser diodes (VCSEL), Coherent Population Trapping resonances (CPT), and micro-fabricated (MEMS) alkali-vapour cells. Here the micro-fabrication of vapour cells has proven a challenging task. All results reported on this task use anodic bonding at high-temperatures (>300°C) to seal the cell [3]. Howev

This paper presents an automated test bench, based on a rigorous measurement procedure, used to fully characterize vibration energy harvesters including determination of the resonance frequency, impedance, optimal load, and output power as a function of both frequency and acceleration. The potential of this method and the performance of the automated test bench allows systematic data acquisition which is essential for a good comparison of all harvesters. A dedicated automation circuit was designed and fabri

In this work we present a novel strategy to fabricate printed comb electrodes devices with decreased size by the introduction of a thin dielectric layer between the two combs. The electrical insulation of the two polarities prevents short-cuts occurring be ...

This paper presents an analytical and experimental study of a compact configuration to harvest energy from a rotating gear using piezoelectric microelectromechanical system harvesters. The reported configuration realizes a contact-type frequency up-conversion mechanism in order to generate useful electrical energy. The up-conversion mechanism was achieved using an atomic force microscope (AFM)-like piezoelectric cantilever plucked by the teeth of the rotating gear that could be eventually driven by an oscil

We present measurements on a superconducting single-electron transistor (SET) in which the metallic tip of a low-temperature scanning force microscope is used as a movable gate. We characterize the SET through charge stability diagram measurements and comp ...

This article presents the design and fabrication of a microfluidic biosensor cartridge for the continuous and simultaneous measurement of biologically relevant analytes in a sample solution. The biosensor principle is based on the amperometric detection of hydrogen peroxide using enzyme-modified electrodes. The low-integrated and disposable cartridge is fabricated in PDMS and SU-8 by rapid prototyping. The device is designed in such a way that it addresses two major challenges of biosensors using microfluid

The efficiency of on-chip microfluidic liquid-liquid extraction was improved by two orders of magnitude by spraying one liquid in another compared to the state-of-the-H-filters. We are developing a portable, integrated optical microsystem in the mid-infrared range to detect cocaine in human saliva. To ensure a good signal-to-noise ratio, the analyte needs to be transferred to an IR-transparent organic solvent by liquid-liquid extraction for subsequent on-chip analysis by IR-spectroscopy. In microfluidics, l

Real-time monitoring of glutamate, being the primary excitatory neurotransmitter, is of utmost importance for understanding the functioning of the central nervous system. Since expected concentrations and its variation in the brain are in the range of 0.5 to 5 μM and interfering substances are present, constraints on the sensitivity and selectivity of the dedicated biosensors are challenging. Moreover, their size determines the spatial resolution of the measurement and tissue damage during insertion and rem

In this paper, a woven textile containing temperature and humidity sensors realized on flexible, plastic stripes is presented. The authors introduce two different sensors fabrication techniques: the first one consists of a conventional photolithography patterning technique; the second one, namely inkjet-printing, is here presented as an effective, low-cost alternative. In both cases, we obtain temperature and humidity sensors that can be easily integrated within a fabric by using a conventional weaving mach

With the rising need for microfabricated chip-scale atomic clocks to enable high precision timekeeping in portable applications, there has been active interest in developing miniature (

Inkjet-printing of solution-processable organic materials is a well-known fabrication method utilised to produce electronic devices on flexible substrates. It is especially suitable to realise, with a simple, digital layout design process, large-area devices with limited production costs [1]. Among the several different types of electronic devices already fabricated, a particularly important role is played by Organic Field Effect Transistors (OFETs) [2]. OFETs have been already proved to be capable to detec

The emergence of the fields of wearable devices, e-textiles and smart packaging brings new requirements on electronics and sensing systems. One or a combination of the following properties can be desired for their proper operation and to meet the functionalities required by the application in order to improve market penetration. Very low-cost, thin, large area, lightweight, flexibility, conformability, transparency, stretchability are some of the characteristics that can be offered by making sensors on poly

The work presented demonstrates the utilization of micro-contact printing of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of gold nanoparticles (NPs) to pattern the porous thin metallic film composing the top electrode of an ultra-fast capacitive relative humidity sensor based on miniaturized parallel-plates electrodes. The rest of the device, which occupies an area of only 0.0314 mm(2), is fabricated by inkjet printing stacked individual drops of functional materials, namely gold NPs for the bottom electrode and a pol

Interdigitated electrodes are common structures in the fields of microelectronics and MEMS. Recent developments in flexible electronics compel an understanding of such structures under bending constraints. In this work, the behavior of interdigitated micro ...
