The transverse piezoelectric coefficient d(31)*, has been calculated for the six domain-engineered structures occurring in perovskite single crystals, using data for rhombohedral PMN-33PT [0.67Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.33PbTiO(3)], orthorhombic potassium niobate ...

The piezoelectric properties of the bismuth titanate niobate Bi7Ti4NbO21 have been studied. The two phase transitions at 677 degrees and 856 degrees C are analyzed based on the measured piezoelectric properties. It is shown that the Bi7Ti4NbO21 compound is a ferroelectric until 856 degrees C. Bi3TiNbO9 clusters are shown to exist within Bi7Ti4NbO21 grains. These clusters may be responsible for the small additional piezoelectric activity of the studied material at temperatures higher than 856 degrees C.

Unexpectedly high-longitudinal piezoelectric coefficients have recently been reported in c-axis oriented Pb(Zr,Ti)O-3 thin films with morphotropic phase boundary composition [Fu , Appl. Phys. Lett. 80, 3572 (2002)]. Our analysis and experimental results show that, in comparison with other methods commonly used to investigate piezoelectric response of thin films, the charge integration technique used by Fu may lead to an order of magnitude higher apparent piezoelectric coefficients if the substrate on which

While commonly used piezoelectric materials contain lead, non-hazardous, high-performance piezoelectrics are yet to be discovered. Charged domain walls in ferroelectrics are considered inactive with regards to the piezoelectric response and, therefore, are ...

The crystal structure and property changes of sodium bismuth titanate (Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3, NBT) piezoelectric ceramics are reported as a function of La modification (0.5-2.0 at. %) and increasing temperature using high resolution x-ray diffraction, permittivit ...

Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 (PMN) alkoxide precursor solutions were synthesized and used to prepare thin films by spin coating on TiO2/Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates. Many parameters like the use of homogeneous and stable precursor solutions and appropriate processing were used to greatly reduce the presence of the nonferroelectric pyrochlore phase. Transmission electron microscopy investigations, dielectric, electrostrictive, and direct current field induced piezoelectric measurements were carried out and have shown tha

Configuration of domain walls in undoped and Fe+3-doped lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics at the morphotropic phase boundary has been investigated by the transmission electron microscopy. The distance between domain walls in undoped PZT is on the orde ...

Dense and phase-pure ferroelectric ceramics of 75 mol.% Bi0.5K0.5TiO3 - 25 mol.% BiFeO3 are prepared by the conventional solid state reaction method. Their crystal structure is analyzed and discussed. The dielectric and piezoelectric properties of the cera ...

In ferroic materials, the dielectric, piezoelectric, magnetic, and elastic coefficients are significantly affected by the motion of domain walls. This motion can be described as the propagation of a wall across various types and strengths of pinning center ...

We investigate the atomistic structure of ferroelastic-ferroelectric 90 degrees domain walls in PbTiO3 with first-principles calculations and high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. We find sharp discontinuities in the variation of latti ...

Charged domain walls in ferroelectrics are movable and electronically conducting interfaces inside insulating materials. A simple and reliable method for their artificial production with ultraviolet (UV) light is described. The UV illumination produces fre ...
