Magnetic impurities in solids cause manifold changes in their macroscopic properties, such as anomalous low temperature resistance due to Kondo screening, reduction of the superconducting transition temperature due to local suppression of the order paramet ...

We report on bimetallic FeRh clusters with a narrow size-distribution grown on graphene on Ir(111) as a carbon-supported model catalyst to promote low-temperature catalytic CO oxidation. By combining scanning tunneling microscopy with catalytic performance ...

We compare different growth methods with the aim of optimizing the long-range order of a graphene layer grown on Ru(0001). Combining chemical vapor deposition with carbon loading and segregation of the surface layer leads to autocorrelation lengths of 240 ...

Electron spin resonance with a scanning tunneling microscope (ESR-STM) combines the high energy resolution of spin resonance spectroscopy with the atomic scale control and spatial resolution of STM. Here we describe the upgrade of a helium-3 STM with a 2D ...

Lanthanide atoms on surfaces are an exceptional platform for atomic-scale magnetic information storage. However, their potential as qubits remains unexplored due to the limited number of experimental setups that can coherently drive the spins of single ada ...

Enantioselectivity in heterogeneous catalysis strongly depends on the chirality transfer between catalyst surface and all reactants, intermediates, and the product along the reaction pathway. Herein we report the first enantioselective on-surface synthesis ...

We combine spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy with quantum master equation analysis to investigate the spin dynamics of the single atom magnet Dy on graphene/Ir(111). By performing reading and writing experiments, we show that the strongly spin p ...

Nanomagnets of controlled size, organized into regular patterns open new perspectives in the fields of nanoelectronics, spintronics, and quantum computation. Self-assembling processes on various types of substrates allow designing fine-structured architect ...

Intermetallic compounds are a promising class of materials as stable and selective heterogeneous catalysts. Here, the (111) and (-1-1-1) single crystal surfaces of the PdGa intermetallic compound were studied as model catalysts with regard to the selective ...

We report on the magnetic properties of HoCo dimers as a model system for the smallest intermetallic compound of a lanthanide and a transition metal atom. The dimers are adsorbed on ultrathin MgO(100) films grown on Ag(100). New for 4f elements, we detect ...

We present a comprehensive study of Er(trensal) single-ion magnets deposited in ultrahigh vacuum onto metallic surfaces. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that the molecular structure is preserved after sublimation, and that the molecules are physisorbed on Au(111) while they are chemisorbed on a Ni thin film on 0(100) single-crystalline surfaces. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements performed on Au(111) samples covered with molecular monolayers held at temperatures down to 4 K sugge

The structure of ultrathin NaCl films on Au(1 1 1) and on Au(11 12 12), as well as the one of bimolecular 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI) and 1,4-bis-(2,4-diamino-1,3,5,-triazine)-benzene (BDATB) islands on NaCl films on both surfaces have ...

We present the first experimental determination of the intra-atomic exchange energy between the inner 4f and the outer 6s5d shells in rare-earth elements. Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy on individual rare-earth atoms adsorbed on metal-supported ...

We present investigations on noncovalent bonding and supramolecular self-assembly of two related molecular building blocks at a noble metal surface: 4-[trans-2-(pyrid-4-yl-vinyl)]benzoic acid (PVBA) and 4-[(pyrid-4-yl-ethynyl)]benzoic acid (PEBA). These rigid, rodlike molecules comprising the same complementary moieties for hydrogen bond formation are comparable in shape and size. For PVBA, the ethenylene moiety accounts for two-dimensional (2-D) chirality upon confinement to a surface; PEBA is linear and t

The magnetic properties and the atomic scale morphology of bimetallic two-dimensional nanoislands, epitaxially grown on fcc(111) metal surfaces, have been studied by means of Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. We investigate the ...

The spatially resolved identification of active sites on the heterogeneous catalyst surface is an essential step toward directly visualizing a catalytic reaction with atomic scale. To date, ferrous centers on platinum group metals have shown promising pote ...

The physical and chemical properties of low-dimensional structures depend on their size and shape, and can be very different from those of bulk matter. If such structures have at least one dimension small enough that quantum-mechanical effects prevail, their behaviour can be particularly interesting. In this way, for example, magnetic nanostructures can be made from materials that are non-magnetic in bulk(1), catalytic activity can emerge from traditionally inert elements such as gold(2), and electronic beh

The magnetic quantum states of holmium single atom magnets on MgO(100) have proven extremely robust when exposed to high magnetic fields and temperatures up to 35 K. Here we address the stability of Ho at small magnetic fields, where the hyperfine interact ...

The adsorption and ordering of the molecule terephthalic acid (TPA), 1,4-benzene-dicarboxylic acid C6H4-(COOH)(2), on the reconstructed Au(111) surface has been studied in situ in ultrahigh vacuum by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at room temperature. ...

We combine x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), x-raymagnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) data with first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations and amultiorbital many-body Hamiltonian approach to u ...
