on-uniform fiber distribution can significantly reduce the extension of multiple-cracking and favor crack local-izations in Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) members under tension with important implication on the sought durability. ...

Fatigue is one of the most prevalent issues, which directly influences the service life expectancy of concrete structures. Fatigue has been investigated for years for steel structures. However, recent findings suggest that concrete structures may also be s ...

The biaxial flexural response of strain-hardening UHPFRC circular slab element is investigated experimentally and analytically using the ring-on-ring test. The Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technology is applied to capture the 3D full-field of strain and ...

The extremely low permeability of Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concretes (UHPFRC) associated to their outstanding mechanical properties make them especially suitable to locally "harden" reinforced concrete structures in critical zones subjected ...

Fatigue damage accumulation and failure of steel reinforcement bars (rebars) is a stochastic process. Scatter can be influenced by the sensitivity of the short crack growth to the microstructural features, especially near the fatigue limit. This work inves ...

The forms of U-shaped UHPFRC beams have not been investigated for the highway footbridge. Compared with the traditional section forms, the U-shaped UHPFRC beams can reduce the material consumption under the condition of providing the same bearing capacity. ...

Two main factors govern the ingress of chloride ions into concrete reinforced with ordinary steel reinforcement, from de-icing salts: (1) the cover concrete (permeability, thickness), and (2) the microclimatic conditions (humidity, temperature, concentration of de-icing salts) at the concrete surface. A numerical model of chloride transport, taking into consideration environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, snow, rain and salt spreading), was used to predict the chloride profiles in concrete represe

The work focuses on the strength and ductility performance of UHPFRC-RC composite structures, promoting UHPFRC as a protective/reinforcing layer for new construction. Design standard SIA 2052:2016 boosted UHPFRC applications in Switzerland. Data analysis shows that the national technical community regards UHPFRC mainly as a material to enhance the resistance and durability of existing structures. While the increase in strength provided by UHPFRC is evident, assessing deformation capacity for new or repaire

Structural engineers today are still educated mainly to design new structures. This ignores the fact that structures already exist and need to be maintained. Students are thus often ill-equipped to deal with maintenance and preservation of existing structu ...

Timber-Concrete Composite (TCC) structures allow taking synergistic advantage of the properties of both materials to optimize the overall performances in terms of lightness, slenderness, acoustic insulation, vibrational behaviour and environmental footprin ...

Existing riverbank riprap could face the risk of failure if the flood regime changes in future. Additionally, changed sediment transport in rivers, as a possible result of climate change, impacts the failure risk of flood protection measures. Evaluation of ...

Fatigue cracks tend to initiate on the rebar surface and therefore, the surface conditions may control their fatigue behaviour. This study investigates the influence of surface microstructure and roughness dispersion on the scatter and fatigue life of hot ...

This paper introduces the uniformity factor mu(2) for considering the local fiber distribution within elements made with Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites (UHPFRC). The influence of mu(2) on the strain-hardening response of UH ...

Decision makers use bridge management systems to determine the optimal allocation of available resources. These systems are currently focused on the structural condition of deteriorating bridges with respect to traffic loads. Bridges, however, are affected by multiple hazards, such as flooding and earthquakes, and not only traffic loading. These multiple hazards should be considered in these management systems when determining the optimal intervention. A risk-based approach can be used to determine the opti

The thermal effects on the Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) behavior are still not completely known. Under high temperatures, the processes that interact at early age are thermo-activated. All the experimental results obtained with ...

The resistance as well as strain hardening and softening properties of UHPFRC depend on the type of matrix and mainly on the initial fibre dosage and final fibre distribution and orientation in the cast element. According to the final fibre distribution and orientation these properties may vary in a wide range. The strength and deformability distribution in a thin UHPFRC panel is studied. Tensile and flexural specimens cut in different directions and at different positions in the panel are analysed in order

Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Composites (UHPFRC) is a cementitious material showing relatively high tensile strength and significant tensile strain-hardening behaviour (given a certain volume of fibres). Adding a layer of UHPFRC or UHPFRC combin ...

Constructed in 1969, the Chillon viaducts constitute a vital component of the Swiss roadway network. The bridge deck was strengthened in 2015 by means of an Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cement-based Composite for alleviating the effects of deter ...

The influence of thermal curing on the evolution of the material properties and the UHPFRC behaviour was investigated. Tests results showed a beneficial effect of a high temperature curing on the early age material properties due to the thermo-activation e ...

Ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced cement-based composite (UHPFRC) has been increasingly adopted for rehabilitation projects over the past two decades, proving itself as a reliable, cost-efficient and sustainable alternative against conventional metho ...
