This article presents a study on the foam processing of sustainable biocomposites made of polyl(actic acid) (PLA) and functionalized microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) using water as a foaming agent. MFC contains moisture and can be used as a water carrying ...

Sports helmets provide incomplete protection against brain injuries. Here we aim to improve helmet liner efficiency by employing a novel approach that optimizes their properties. By exploiting a finite element model that simulates head impacts, we develope ...

Liquid composite moulding of Lactam 12 monomer and activating system (APLC12) into satin weave carbon fabrics is investigated, with emphasis on minimising the void content in the final part. The main sources for void formation are identified. The solidific ...

The invention is concerned with an integrated process for the manufacture of polymer and/or composite products, comprising the integration of processing operations to achieve a plurality of material conversion steps, such as impregnation, consolidation and bonding, within one single controlled fabrication cycle. The process includes an in-situ final preparation of at least one composite preform at the location of the moulding operation and an integrated moulding operation comprising a step of providing an a

glass fibre composites were successfully prepared. A specific processing method was developed for consolidated composites exhibiting different fibre concentration gradients. As the conditions to prepare PLA polymer foams with specific porosity morphology w ...

Cellular thermoplastic structures with hierarchical multi-scale porosity (preferably 1-300 µm micro-porosity to 0.3-10 mm macro-porosity) are produced from an integrated approach of 3D printing, preferably by Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), and of supercr ...

The crystallization kinetics of polyamide-12 has been investigated using a combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and hot-stage optical microscopy. The DSC data for isothermal crystallization were consistent with a simple two-parameter Avrami model for isothermal crystallization and optical measurements of the spherulite growth rates and nucleation density. On the basis of semiempirical expressions for these quantities, it is shown that with small adjustments the model can also account for D

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the development of universal soft grippers that can handle objects of varying form factors (including flat objects), surface conditions (including moistened or oily objects), and mechanical properties ( ...

We report on the modelling and experimental validation of a photopolymerizable hydrogel for a Nucleus Pulposus replacement. ...

Granular hydrogels with high stability, strength, and toughness are laborious to develop. Post-curing is often employed to bind microgels chemically and enhance mechanical properties. Here a unique strategy was investigated to maintain microgels together w ...

The invention relates in particular to a method to process composite structures with tailored stiffness and damping performance incorporating a smart material, namely a shear thickening fluid (STF), preferably at the interface between two elements belongin ...

Phosphate glass (PG) of the composition 0.46(CaO)–0.04(Na2O)–0.5(P2O5) was used as filler in poly-L-lactic acid (PLA) foams developed as degradable scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. The effect of PG on PLA was assessed both in bulk and porous composit ...

Poly(oxyethylene 20 sorbitan) monolaurate (Tween® 20) methacrylates were synthesized by coupling methacryloyl chloride (MeOCl) to Tween 20 in the presence of 4-(N,N-dimethylamino) pyridine, using THF as a solvent, in order to investigate their suitability ...

PLLA crystallization rates increase with nHA content owing to increased nucleation, which compensates a decrease in spherulite growth rate, G, at 100 to 130 °C, and to suppression of the twin peak in G(T) seen in pure PLLA, linked to a transition from the ...

Bone tissue engineering aims at developing scaffolds, or porous structures, as supports for cell migration, proliferation and differentiation, in order to favor bone healing. L-poly lactic acid (PLA) foams, which were reinforced or not with β-tricalcium ph ...

A numerical model of the medial open wedge tibial osteotomy based on the finite element method was developed. Two plate positions were tested numerically. In a configuration, (a), the plate was fixed in a medial position and (b) in an anteromedial position ...

Supercritical carbon dioxide processing of poly--lactide (PLLA)/hydroxyapatite (nHA) nanocomposites was investigated as a means to prepare foams suitable as scaffolds in bone tissue engineering applications. For given foaming parameters, addition of nHA to ...

Wood fiber-reinforced polylactic acid composite foams have been successfully produced using supercritical carbon dioxide. The addition of fibers had a strong effect on microstructure of the foams. An increase in wood fiber content implied smaller average c ...
