The aim of this investigation was to test the biocompatibility of three-dimensional bioresorbable foams made of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA), alone or filled with hydroxyapatite (HA) or beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP), with human primary osteoblasts, usi ...

A polymer material system has been developed to propose an injectable, UV and in situ curable hydrogel with properties similar to the native nucleus pulposus of intervertebral disc. Neat hydrogels based on Tween® 20 trimethacrylates (T3) and N-vinyl-2-pyrr ...

Biodegradable viscoelastic poly(ester urethane)-based scaffolds show great promise for tissue engineering. In this study, the preparation of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (nHA)/poly(ester urethane) composite scaffolds using a salt-leaching-phase inverse pro ...

Fetal bone cells were shown to have an interesting potential for therapeutic use in bone tissue engineering due to their rapid growth rate and their ability to differentiate into mature osteoblasts in vitro. We describe hereafter their capability to promot ...

Tissue decellularisation has gained much attention in regenerative medicine as an alternative to synthetic materials. In decellularised tissues, biological cues can be maintained and provide cellular environments still unmet by synthetic materials. Supercr ...

Previous studies support resorbable biocomposites made of poly L-lactic acid (PLA) and β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) produced by supercritical gas foaming as a suitable scaffold for tissue engineering. The present study was undertaken to demonstrate the bio ...

Bone is a complex porous composite structure with specific characteristics such as viscoelasticity and anisotropy, both in morphology and mechanical properties. Bone defects are regularly filled with artificial tissue grafts, which should ideally have prop ...

Cellular thermoplastic structures with multiscale porosity (1–300 µm microporosity to 0.3–10 mm macroporosity) are produced from an integrated approach of 3D printing by Fused Deposition Modeling printing and Supercritical CO2 Foaming. Porous strands and r ...

Attaching hydrogels to soft internal tissues is crucial for the development of various biomedical devices. Tough sticky hydrogel patches present high adhesion, yet with lack of injectability and the need for treatment of contacting surface. On the contrary ...

Phosphate glass (PG) of the composition 0.46(CaO)-0.04(Na(2)O)- 0.5(P(2)O(5)) was used as filler in poly-L-lactic acid (PLA) foams developed as degradable scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. The effect of PG on PLA was assessed both in bulk and porous c ...

The integration of shear-thickening fluids (STFs) into composite structures has been investigated with the aim of tuning part stiffness and damping capacity under dynamic deformation. Results from oscillatory rheological measurements for a STF based on con ...

The damping properties of unidirectional, 0/90 and twill 2/2 flax fibre (FF) reinforced epoxy composites containing 40 vol% of fibres have been measured by vibration beam testing (VBT). The influence of the impregnation quality, the fibre/matrix adhesion, ...

Background - Nucleus pulposus degeneration is a very common musculo-skeletal pathology, which is in part responsible for low back pain, a pandemic medical problem. Artificial hydrogels are being investigated by research group around the world for the purpose of replacing the damaged tissue and thus contributing to a healing solution for low back pain. In collaboration between the LTC and the LBO, a composite reinforced hydrogel has been developed with mechanical and swelling characteristics well suited for

Optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy have been used to investigate the morphology of polylactide (PLA)/microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) composites prepared by: compression molding of wet-comingled MFC and PLA latex or powder, twin-screw ...

Three methods to mix ceramic fillers, hydroxyapatite or β-tricalcium phosphate, with a polymer matrix, a poly l-lactic acid, are investigated as a first step prior to supercritical foaming to prepare porous composite structures for biomedical applications. ...

Photopolymerization is a common tool to harden materials initially in a liquid state. A surgeon can directly trigger the solidification of a dental implant or a bone or tissue filler. Traditionally, photopolymerization has been used mainly in dentistry. Ov ...

Dry, compression molded films of medical grade poly-L-lactide (PLLA) showed a marked reduction in tensile strength and strain after accelerated ageing in aqueous NaOH at 50 degrees C. accompanied by mass loss, surface erosion, increased hydrophilicity and, ...

Two forms of carbon fibre reinforced polyamide 12 (PA12) were compared during non-isothermal stamp forming. The first was a stretch broken commingled yarn woven into a fabric, studied at three initial preconsolidation levels. The second was produced by in ...

Biocompatible composites, whose porosity and fibre fraction call be tailored over a large range and whose mechanical resistance is comparable to that Of natural bone, were processed with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and continuous glass fibres. The processing s ...

Sandwiches based on stampable foam core and face sheets offer potential for cost-effective applications. Since the formability of such sandwich structures mainly depends on the drapability of the face sheets, the deformation behaviour of several types of textile preforms was evaluated. Glass fibre fabric preforms in the form of plain weave, twill, crowfoot and eight-harness satin as well as warp and weft-knitted architectures were studied. The tensile properties of the dry fabrics at various orientations an
