This paper presents an overview of the recent developments of modifier-adaptationschemes for real-time optimization of uncertain processes. These schemes have the ability to reach plant optimality upon convergence despite the presence of structural plant-m ...

Extent-based Incremental Model Identification (IMI) uses the concept of extent of reaction and the integral method of parameter estimation to identify reaction kinetics from transient concentration measurements. This study proposes to incorporate calorimet ...

For the optimization of dynamic systems, it is customary to use measurements to combat the effect of uncertainty. In this context, an approach that consists of tracking the necessary conditions of optimality is gaining in popularity. The approach relies st ...

Identification of mathematical models is an important task for the design and the optimization of biokinetic processes. Monod or Tessier growth-rate models are often chosen by default, although these models are not able to represent the dynamics of all bac ...

We investigate the general iterative controller tuning (ICT) problem, where the task is to find a set of controller parameters that optimize some user-defined performance metric when the same control task is to be carried out repeatedly. Following a repeat ...

Transformation to variant and invariant states, called extents, is used to decouple the dynamic effects of reaction systems and serves as basis for incremental model identification, in which kinetic models are identified individually for each dynamic effec ...

The iterative data-driven method labelled Correlation-based Tuning (CbT) is considered in this paper for the tuning of linear time-invariant multivariable controllers. The approach allows one to tune some elements of the controller transfer function matrix ...

Recently, different real-time optimization (RTO) schemes that guarantee feasibility of all RTO iterates and monotonic convergence to the optimal plant operating point have been proposed. However, simulations reveal that these schemes converge very slowly t ...

State estimation is a widely used concept in the control community, and the literature mostly concentrates on the estimation of all states. However, in soft sensor problems, the emphasis is on estimating a few soft outputs as accurately as possible. The co ...

An iterative data-driven correlation-based method has been proposed recently to tune multivariable linear time-invariant controllers in closed-loop operation. In this contribution, the preferred way of exciting a 2 × 2 system is investigated via the accura ...

Kinetic models contribute greatly to cost reduction during the process development phase and are also helpful for process monitoring and control purposes. Kinetic models describe the underlying reactions, mass transport and operating conditions of the reac ...

The experimental validation of a real-time optimization (RTO) strategy for the optimal operation of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack is reported in this paper. Unlike many existing studies, the RTO approach presented here utilizes the constraint-adapta ...

This paper proposes two transformations for homogeneous reaction systems with inlet and outlet streams that allow isolating three distinct parts of the state vector, namely, the reaction variants, the reaction invariants but inlet- flow variants, and the re ...

Challenges in real-time process optimization mainly arise from the inability to build and adapt accurate models for complex physico-chemical processes. This paper surveys different ways of using measurements to compensate for model uncertainty in the conte ...

We investigate the turnpike and dissipativity properties of continuous-time optimal control problems. These properties play a key role in the analysis and design of schemes for dynamic real-time optimization and economic model predictive control. We show i ...

The present article looks at the problem of iterative controller tuning, where the parameters of a given controller are adapted in an iterative manner to bring the user-defined performance metric to a local minimum for some repetitive process. Specifically ...

The modifier-adaptation methodology enables real-time optimization (RTO) of plant operation in the presence of considerable plant-model mismatch. It requires the estimation of plant gradients. Obtaining these gradients is expensive as it involves potential ...

This paper is concerned with input adaptation in dynamic processes in order to guarantee feasible and optimal operation despite the presence of uncertainty. For optimal control problems having terminal constraints, two sets of directions can be distinguish ...
