Transverse or longitudinal movements of a water body are observed for flows along cavities, river embayments, groyne fields or harbours. They are significant for certain flow conditions and geometrical properties. To study the effect of large-scale roughne ...

In many countries dams are found to have insufficient flood discharge capacity with respect to updated design floods. Upgradig of spillway discharge capacity has therefore become a significant issue for operators of hydropower plants. The Gloriettes concrete arch dam in the French Pyrenees, operated by EDF, shows a deficit of 80m3/s for the new design flood of 150m3/s. Therefore a complementary spillway on the right bank is to be implemented. The type of labyrinth weir known as the Piano Key Weir (PKW) was

Side weirs and overtopable levees are widely used to increase flood routing along a channel or river. The lateral loss of water reduces the sediment transport capacity leading to the formation of a local sediment deposit close to the overflow. Since the ex ...

The aim of this short paper is to summarize main outcomes of the workshop, in order to guide future developments of research on Piano Key Weirs (PKW) towards most effective and integrated directions. The main research topics highlighted in this text came out from the 34 high-quality presentations given during the conference, as well as from the fruitful discussions in which the participants were actively involved. Many more truly innovative and promising ideas can be found throughout the other papers gather
