Modern life in predominantly indoor environments has led to a profound alteration in the amount, spectral composition, and pattern of light humans are daily exposed to. Given the role of light in health and wellbeing, and with the aim to understand how modern living can be better aligned with human biology, light-dosimetry plays an important role in characterising personal light exposure across individuals. To consider the spectral composition in light-dosimetry and evaluate the variability and effects of i

Architects are increasingly using digital tools during the design process, particularly as they approach complex problems such as designing for successful daylighting performance. However, while simulation tools may provide the designer with valuable infor ...

This paper analyzes the relative distribution of annual saturation and contrast effects of discomfort glare in a deep open-plan office. A previous comparative study has shown that while hybrid glare metrics were found to predict glare well in most scenario ...

A reliable computer simulation of natural and artificial lighting of an indoor environment requires the thorough knowledge of the angular intensity distribution of light scattered or emitted by the various objects involved such as the illuminated surfaces, the trans-illuminated windows or fenestration systems, as well as the luminaires. The angular intensity distribution of light flux reflected, transmitted or emitted as a function of the illumination angle can be measured with an instrument called goniopho

The international greenhouse gas agreements call for mitigations in the building industry. Thus, the number of scientific publications about life-cycle performance assessment (LCPA) follows an exponential trend since the 2000s. However, previous surveys hi ...

Access to daylight and views out are usually recognized as beneficial to occupant comfort at the workplace. Simultaneously, discomfort glare due to direct sunlight is a known source of occupant dissatisfaction. Shading fabrics with low openness factor have ...

Project 24 is an urban art project in the underpass (M1 metro) in the north district of EPFL. This underpass is a key way for access to the EPFL campus, and to reach the new northern district and the SwissTech Convention Center. The project is focused on the design of the lighting concept of the renovated underpass, taking into consideration aesthetics, colour and energy concepts.

The discovery of a novel non-rod, non-cone photoreceptor in the human eye that mediates a number of effects on the brain has sparked a growing interest in incorporating these non-visual effects of light into the design process of buildings. Appropriately–t ...

Daylighting opens up a range of topics of investigation at the interface between architecture and building technology, especially when focusing on the integration of building performance in design. While it has a strong impact on human health and well-being, and an undeniable association with (subjective) emotional delight and perceived quality of a space, it is also highly dynamic and variable in nature, based on a combination of predictable (sun course) and stochastic (weather) patterns, which makes it bo

The ipRGCs in the human eye mediate several effects on people, such as alertness and circadian rhythms. The spectral, temporal and spatial characteristics of light influence the magnitude of these effects. To facilitate the anticipation of the ipRGC-influe ...

The assessment of the solar potential in urban areas relies on a geometrical model that can be defined at different levels of detail (LOD). In this work we compare the solar irradiation simulated on the surfaces of four sample buildings, which were modeled ...

Understanding the factors that affect human thermal responses is necessary to properly design and operate low-energy buildings. It has been suggested that factors not related to the thermal environment can affect thermal responses of occupants, but these f ...

Digital video based luminance mapping systems require the establishment of a precise relation between the considered spatial referential and the associated pixel coordinates on the image, that may vary with the measurement conditions. In this paper, an adaptation of the image calibration according to the referential variations is proposed, based on the use of a set of matrices individually associated to each spatial coordinate. This approach is given through an application example on a recent digital imagin

This poster introduces the methodology and main findings to date in Kynthia Chamilothori's PhD thesis, regarding the use of virtual reality as a substitute for experiments in the real space, and the investigation of how facade characteristics influence the perception of a daylit space.

Many daylighting applications require a precise knowledge of the transmission properties of fenestration materials, called bi-directional transmission distribution functions (BTDF), which necessitate systematic and accurate measurements. A new type of bi-directional photogoniometer, based on advanced imaging techniques, has been developed to this end; its mechanical concept, the calibration procedures and the first results are presented here.

To embed the diversity and variability of human needs as foundational elements of daylighting design and put human occupants back at the core of the building question, we need to reach out to fundamental discoveries from neuroscience, biology and other fields, which will bring new insights and a deeper understanding of how we interact with our environment. This talk will discuss how to bring exciting research perspectives regarding the assessment of daylighting performance by considering three interpretatio

Natural light greatly impacts how a building is experienced by its occupants. It affects their well-being, notably from their health and biological clock perspectives, but also their perceived visual and thermal comfort, or their emotional response. This lecture will explore current research efforts aiming towards a deeper integration of daylighting performance and indoor comfort in design, by reaching out to various fields of science, from chronobiology and neuroscience to psychophysics and computer graphi

Within the scope of a broader research project about visual and thermal interaction effects on human comfort and perception, the aim of this paper is to study the variation of thermal, visual and overall comfort votes of people exposed to blue and orange g ...

To investigate the relationship between occupants’ perception of control over building elements and their comfort, we conducted a study where two prototype office rooms were compared: while the first room allowed occupants to open or close the window and c ...

The present simulation case study compares the impact of electric lighting distributions in relation to work-desk location and orientation on work-plane and eye-level illumination within a small private office. The aim of this study is to better understand ...
