Increasing efforts are devoted to enhance and optimize the environmental comfort in buildings, as this aspect plays a major role in the affection of health, performance and general well-being of people. Indoor air quality, acoustic ambience, light and thermal conditions have been proved to be fundamental factors for the indoor environmental quality. Engineers must be aware of the effects of the interactions between these factors on the indoor comfort as people react simultaneously to diverse stimuli belongi

Thanks to fundamental discoveries from neuroscience, biology and others, we have achieved a deeper understanding of how we interact with our environment. It is time to bring this knowledge back to architecture: we have access to the essential ingredients of human-responsive design, now we need to cook. This requires performance from a human needs standpoint to be considered from a radically new perspective, rooted in interdisciplinary bridging with other domains of fundamental science and inherently dynamic

Efficient collection and redistribution of the direct and diffuse components of daylight in buildings remains a major objective of advanced fenestration systems. Such systems, including novel solar blinds, new glazing or coating materials and daylight-redirecting devices, can improve significantly the penetration of daylight in deep rooms to reduce electricity consumption while improving visual comfort conditions greatly; at the same time, they can lead to larger solar gains in winter combined with lower so

Since 2002, when the first reports on the discovery of a novel type of mammalian ocular photoreceptor were published, a new field of study at the intersection of photobiology and architecture started to emerge. These novel non-rod, non-cone photoreceptors in the retinal ganglion cell layer are the primary mediators of nonvisual responses to light in humans, including synchronizing circadian rhythms and directly alerting the brain. This study aims to understand how these nonvisual responses evolve over time

To describe complex fenestration systems such as novel solar blinds, new glazing or coating materials, daylight and sunlight-redirecting devices, a detailed description of their optical properties is needed, given by their Bidirectional Transmission (or Re ...

Office employees are influenced by various environmental and contextual factors that prompt interaction with building interfaces, such as adjusting windows or blinds. These behaviours can impact predictions of buildings' performance. While occupant behaviour models often rely on physical variables, they tend to overlook users' actual motivations and how these interact. This study introduces a novel mobile application, OBdrive, that uniquely captures occupants' motivations in real-time, offering direct insig

This paper investigates the formulation of a modelling framework for the nonvisual effects of daylight, such as entrainment of the circadian system and maintenance of alertness. The body of empirical data from photobiology studies is now sufficient to star ...

A detailed knowledge of the light distribution characteristics through advanced window systems is required to improve the visual comfort of the building's occupants while controlling the propagation of daylight in rooms and the solar gains. An innovative b ...

The measurement and classification of light is essential across many scientific disciplines. Devices used to measure light range from the highly precise scanning spectroradiometers to the more practical compact multichannel filter-array type imaging sensor ...

As of 2020, every new building in the European Union will have to reach the nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) performance. However, building nZEB will not be sufficient to reach carbon neutrality in 2050 as required by the last IPCC report: indeed, even n ...

Many municipalities and public authorities have supported the creation of solar cadastres to map the solar energy-generation potential of existing buildings. Despite advancements in modelling solar potential, most of these tools provide simple evaluations ...

Human circadian, neuroendocrine, and neurobehavioral responses to light are mediated primarily by melanopsin-containing intrinsically-photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) but they also receive input from visual photoreceptors. Relative photorecep ...

The importance of light not only as a therapeutic tool but as an essential element of healthy living has been highlighted by the recent discovery of a specialized photoreceptor in the eye responsible for synchronizing our internal circadian pacemaker. This ...

In industrialized countries, people spend on average 85-90% of their time indoors (1). For this reason, major efforts are being made to understand and control the factors which affect people’s comfort, health and well-being inside buildings (2). The indoor environmental quality is characterized by four main parameters, i.e., indoor air quality, acoustic ambience, visual and thermal conditions. The human senses allow people to perceive the environment and estimate their comfort and acceptability with respect

The increasing interest in solar energy production in urban areas requires an accurate simulation of solar irradiation on building surfaces, including vertical surfaces. However, solar potential analyses are usually conducted on 2.5D models, which are limi ...

While there is a growing use of complex facade designs in contemporary architecture worldwide and across Europe, little is known about the perceptual effects of these facades and the resulting daylight patterns on occupants, or about how such effects might ...

After its journey through space, sunlight arrives on Earth. In addition to illuminating and warming us, daylight plays a multitude of essential roles in our direct environment. Firstly, it is a powerful source of renewable energy whose potential is not yet fully exploited. While technology is constantly evolving to make the most of the sun’s energy, plants are experts in this and make optimal use of this energy to produce food. The second contribution in this session was dedicated to the role of daylight in

The selection of a fenestration system for a building is critical, as it impacts energy performance, occupant comfort, and ambiance of a space. Complex Fenestration Systems (CFS) address these criteria using a wide variety of novel technologies but are dif ...

This paper details the results of an experimental study investigating the combined effect of indoor temperature (19 ℃, 23 ℃ and 27 ℃) and horizontal illuminances (∼140 lx, ∼610 lx and ∼1440 lx) on visual perception, with daylight as the only source of ligh ...

In this study, we evaluate established and newly developed metrics for predicting glare using data from three different research studies. The evaluation covers two different targets: 1. How well the user’s perception of glare magnitude correlates to the pr ...
