We present a model for the disorder of the heterointerfaces in GaAs quantum wells including long-range components like monolayer island formation induced by the surface diffusion during the epitaxial growth process. Taking into account both interfaces, a d ...

We present a systematic numerical approach to compute the eigenmodes and the related eigenfrequencies of a disordered photonic crystal, characterized by small fluctuations of the otherwise periodic dielectric profile. The field eigenmodes are expanded on t ...

Bosonic quantum codes redundantly encode quantum information in the states of a quantum harmonic oscillator, making it possible to detect and correct errors. Schrodinger cat codes-based on the superposition of two coherent states with opposite displacement ...

We propose the use of weakly nonlinear passive materials for prospective applications in integrated quantum photonics. It is shown that strong enhancement of native optical nonlinearities by electromagnetic field confinement in photonic crystal resonators ...

The vacuum (i.e., the ground state) of a system in ultrastrong light-matter coupling contains particles that cannot be emitted without any dynamical perturbation and is thus called virtual. We propose a protocol for inducing and observing real mechanical e ...

A convenient approach for slowing down light in integrated optical circuits is by utilizing a set of coupled microcavities in a photonic crystal lattice. While this provides for flexibility in dispersion engineering, light transport is influenced by a comb ...

The theory of the linear optical response of excitons in quantum wells and polaritons in planar semiconductor microcavities is reviewed, in the light of the existing experiments. For quantum well excitons, it is shown that disorder mainly affects the excit ...

We optimize a photonic crystal slab for the generation of second harmonic. The optimization consists in two steps. In the first step a regular photonic crystal, consisting in a triangular lattice of circular holes in a dielectric slab, is optimized by allo ...

We study the kinetics of polariton condensation accounting for the condensation process as well as the energy relaxation of condensed polaritons due to their scattering with phonons and excitons. By assuming a Boltzmann kinetic description of the scatterin ...

We investigate and characterize the emergence of finite-component dissipative phase transitions (DPTs) in nonlinear photon resonators subject to n-photon driving and dissipation. Exploiting a semiclassical approach, we derive general results on the occurre ...

From fundamental sciences to economics and industry, discrete optimization problems are ubiquitous. Yet, their complexity often renders exact solutions intractable, necessitating the use of approximate methods. Heuristics inspired by classical physics have long played a central role in this domain. More recently, quantum annealing has emerged as a promising alternative, with hardware implementations realized on both analog and digital quantum devices. Here, we develop a heuristic inspired by quantum anneali

We propose a class of quantum simulators for antiferromagnetic spin systems based on coupled photonic cavities in the presence of two-photon driving and dissipation. By modeling the coupling between the different cavities through a hopping term with negati ...

We define quantum chaos and integrability in open quantum many-body systems as a dynamical property of single stochastic realizations, referred to as quantum trajectories. This definition relies on the predictions of random matrix theory applied to the sub ...

The resonant Rayleigh scattering dynamics of excitons in single GaAs quantum wells is investigated. The deviation of the measured intensity from the ideal ensemble average is analyzed as a function of the speckle ensemble size. The influence of the amplitude and correlation length of the exciton disorder potential is traced using a series of samples with varying inhomogeneous broadening and interface island sizes. The experimental data are compared with theoretical predictions using exciton states of spatia

We demonstrate three-dimensional spatial confinement of exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity. Polaritons are confined within a micron-sized region of slightly larger cavity thickness, called mesa, through lateral trapping of their photon compo ...

Spatially resolved photoluminescence spectra of thin GaAs quantum wells are measured by near-field spectroscopy, and two-energy autocorrelation functions of the spectra are derived. We demonstrate distinctly different autocorrelation functions for a 3-nm-thick quantum well grown on a (311)A surface and for quantum wells grown on (100) substrates. The autocorrelation spectra of the (311)A GaAs quantum well are quantitatively described by a statistical disorder model with a single correlation length of 17 nm

The dynamics of resonant Rayleigh scattering (RRS) from excitons localized in a disorder potential with large monolayer islands is investigated theoretically and experimentally. Experimentally, the coherent RRS dynamics from GaAs single quantum wells (SQWs) is deduced by means of passively stabilized spectral interferometry. The new technique is discussed in detail. The results retrieved by spectral interferometry are complemented by data obtained by time-resolved and spectral speckle analysis. A strong dep

V groove GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wires are investigated by spatially resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy using a low-temperature scanning near- field optical microscope. The spectra along the wires feature several sharp emission lines, which are understood as the emission from exciton states localized in inhomogeneities of the confining potential. It is expected that these exciton states spatially overlap and that their energies are correlated, which leads to level repulsion. The statistical analysis of the

The lack of suitable quantum emitters in silicon and silicon-based materials has prevented the realization of room temperature, compact, stable, and integrated sources of single photons in a scalable on-chip architecture, so far. Current approaches rely on exploiting the enhanced optical nonlinearity of silicon through light confinement or slow-light propagation, and are based on parametric processes that typically require substantial input energy and spatial footprint to reach a reasonable output yield. He

We report on nonlinear frequency conversion from the telecom range via second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG) in suspended gallium nitride slab photonic crystal (PhC) cavities on silicon, under continuous-wave resonant excitat ...
