Biocide contamination of receiving waters is generally linked with agriculture. However, recent studies have shown that urban contributions should be also considered. One of the suspected biocide sources in the urban environment is building paint. Biocides like diuron, irgarol, terbutryn, carbendazim, etc., are conventionally used in paint to control fungi, algae, bacteria and other microorganisms that can colonize building façades. The problem of biocides in urban areas is closely linked to meteorological

Human activity results in the production of a wide range of pollutants that can enter the water cycle through stormwater or wastewater. Among others, heavy metals are still detected in high concentrations around urban areas and their impact on aquatic orga ...

Many hydrophilic organic compounds present at low concentrations in municipal wastewater, such as several pharmaceuticals, biocides and pesticides, are recalcitrant in conventional wastewater treatment plants. To improve the biodegradation of these compounds, oxidoreductase enzymes such as laccases could be used. Laccase activity is, however, strongly dependent on the conditions of the treatment such as pH, temperature, reaction time and enzyme concentration. In this study, the optimal conditions for the de

Rainfall for the next century will be influenced by global warming. These modified rainfalls will have influences on rainfall runoff. In order to analyze these impacts, this study compared different buildup and washoff functions with several future rainfall series. These series of rain were first simulated with the Bartlett-Lewis method to disrupt the distribution of rainfall events in winter and summer. Then, the delta factor method has been applied to modify the intensity of rainfall under different scena

Technical solutions aimed at limiting the impacts of urban wet-weather discharges are historically based on an end-of-pipe approach. The characteristics of wet-weather discharges, e. g. intermittent pollution loads, high variations in pollutant concentrati ...

The aim of this work was to evaluate low-cost and easy-to-operate engineering solutions that can be added as a polishing step to small wastewater treatment plants to reduce the micropollutant load to water bodies. The proposed design combines a sand filter ...

A parsimonious model of flow capable of simulating flow in natural/engineered catchments and at WWTP (Wastewater Treatment Plant) inlets was developed. The model considers three interacting, dynamic storages that account for transfer of water within the sy ...

In this paper, an ultra-low power consumption crystal oscillator embedded in an RTC module (ASIC and its crystal resonator) is presented. The technique leverages oscillation amplitude and loads capacitance scaling; it incorporates transistor level merging ...

Many pharmaceutical products find their way into receiving waters, giving rise to concerns regarding their environmental impact. A procedure was proposed that enables ranking of the hazard to aquatic species and human health due to such products. In the pr ...

Painted facades are protected by paints that contain biocides as a protection against degradation. These facades are leached of biocides by rainfall, albeit at low concentrations. Nevertheless, at the city scale the leachable surface area of building facades is significant, and thus there is potential for biocides to enter receiving waters. A city-scale estimation method was developed based on two main steps. In the first step, a series of laboratory experiments on a single facade was used to calibrate and

Many organic compounds present at low concentrations in municipal wastewater, such as various pharmaceuticals and biocides, are recalcitrant in conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). To improve their biodegradation, oxidoreductase enzymes such a ...

Urine source separation (NoMix technology) is a promising innovation in wastewater management. To improve and further develop NoMix technology, it has been implemented in four Swiss households and at our research institute (Eawag). We conducted measurement ...

Horizontal flow constructed wetlands are engineered systems capable of eliminating a wide range of pollutants from the aquatic environment. Nevertheless, poor hydrodynamic behavior is commonly found resulting in preferential pathways and variations in both ...

Pharmaceuticals constitute an important environmental issue for receiving waters. A holistic approach, taking into consideration the sources of these compounds (hospitals, domestic use), discharges (wastewater effluent, combined sewer overflows) and relate ...

Electrolysis of iohexol, an iodinated X-ray contrast medium, on synthetic boron-doped diamond (BDD) thin film electrodes was investigated for the first time. Kinetic experiments of electrochemical oxidation resulted in complete elimination of iohexol. Data from the kinetic experiments were compared against estimates by the kinetic model proposed previously by Comninellis et al. Excellent agreement between the experimental results and the kinetic model was observed. The results suggest that electrolysis on B

Discharges of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and stormwater are recognized as an important source of environmental contamination. However, the harsh sewer environment and particular hydraulic conditions during rain events reduce the reliability of traditi ...

This study investigated the distribution of the fraction of rainfall intercepted by the facades of buildings located in an urbanized area. We used the frequently used semi-empirical standard ISO-15927-3 to simulate Wind-Driven Rain on facades. The implemen ...

Sampling is a key step in the analysis of chemical compounds. It is particularly important in the environmental field, for example for wastewater effluents, wet-weather discharges or streams in which the flows and concentrations vary greatly over time. In ...

Building facades are protected from microbial attack by incorporation of biocides within them. Flow over facades leaches these biocides and transports them to the urban environment. A parsimonious water quantity/quality model applicable for engineered urba ...
