Precise positioning over a long stroke is required in various fields. Important advances in the field of electromagnetic motors, piezoelectric actuators and bearing technology allow nanometric and sub-arc-second resolution for linear or rotary actuators, respectively. Alas, these devices are rather complex, therefore expensive, and require sophisticated assembly techniques for the delicate components. Furthermore, their operation range is often limited to some fractions of a millimeter or a couple of degree

Eddy current techniques are often used to detect and, in some advanced applications, to characterize fatigue surface-breaking cracks appearing in mechanical parts. One of the major difficulties in this approach is to reliably separate the crack contributio ...

It is important to reliably characterize cracks in metallic mechanical parts in order to assess the serenity of damage due to fatigue. The most important parameter for this is the crack depth. This is notoriously difficult with standard Eddy current techni ...

A train-like miniature climbing inspection robot for ferromagnetic tubes is presented in this paper. Using magnetic wheels, it climbs in tubes of 25 mm of diameter and bigger in any orientation, and pass bends with curvatures above 150 mm in some cases. It ...

The invention concerns an inertial sensor or an actuator based on diamagnetic levitation, said inertial sensor or actuator comprising support means serving as main support body for an inertial sensor or for an actuator, a two dimensional array of permanent magnets and a diamagnetic element facing the said array characterized in that said diamagnetic material constitutes the inertial mass or the moving part of the actuator.

This paper reports on a 3 years applied research project dealing with several inspection scenarios of power plants and resulting in many robot prototypes and 3 main achievements. The project is a common effort between industry and university, including ALS ...

We present a miniature magnetic climbing robot with dimensions 96 x 46 x 64mm(3). With two degrees of freedom it is able to climb ferromagnetic surfaces and to make inner plane to plane transitions whatever their inclination is. This robot, named TRIPILLAR ...

Diamagnetic levitation is the only passive levitation at room temperature. It is interesting to use this principle for a contactless conveyor in applications where friction and wear-particle contamination should be avoided such as in a microfactory. Using ...

This paper presents a robotic system that is compatible with anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as well as with the more sensitive functional MRI (fMRI), and can safely and smoothly interact with humanmotion during the imaging. The system takes ad ...

The invention relates to an inertial sensor based on the magnetic levitation of an inertial mass comprising an active magnetic bearing unit arranged in such a way as to levitate the inertial mass and characterized by the fact that it furthermore comprises additional active magnetic bearings units arranged in such a way as :- to control the position of said inertial mass along three independent axis. - to create, for any of said independent axis, restoring forces that can be oriented in any of the two direct

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present a novel miniature magnetic climbing robot for industrial inspection. The robot has high mobility with low complexity. ...
