The possibility of using the increasing computing power available in cloud infrastructures requires the development of new approaches for application software development and optimization. Emerging edge computing paradigms offer the possibility of reducing ...

This article presents an implantable wireless system for remote hemodynamic monitoring, which enables direct, continuous (24/7), and simultaneous measurement of pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) and cross-sectional area (CSA) of the artery. The implantable ...

The performance of programs executed on heterogeneous parallel platforms largely depends on the design choices regarding how to partition the processing on the various different processing units. In other words, it depends on the assumptions and parameters ...

Dataflow programming is a methodology that enables the development of high-level, parametric programs that are independent of the underlying platform. This approach is particularly useful for heterogeneous platforms, as it eliminates the need to rewrite ap ...

The possibility of specifying both SW and HW components using the same language is a very attractive design approach. However, despite the efforts spent for implementing such approach using common programming languages such as C and C++, it has not yet shown to be viable and efficient for complex design. The main reason is the difficulty of expressing architectural properties at the level of a common description, difficulty that finally results into the failure of synthesizing efficient HW and efficient par

While research on the design of heterogeneous concurrent systems has a long and rich history, a unified design methodology and tool support has not emerged so far, and thus the creation of such systems remains a difficult, time-consuming and error-prone pr ...

Concurrently exploring both algorithmic and architectural optimizations is a new design paradigm. This survey paper addresses the latest research and future perspectives on the simultaneous development of video coding, processing, and computing algorithms ...

Efficient information retrieval is a fundamental requirement in a wide array of applications, ranging from bioinformatics to database systems, and critically hinges on the complexity of an underlying distance metric. This work presents a novel approach to ...

This paper describes a pipeline synthesis and optimization technique that increases data throughput of FPGA-based system using minimum pipeline resources. The technique is applied on \CAL dataflow language, and designed based on relations, matrices and gra ...

Recent GPU architectures make available numbers of parallel processing units that exceed by orders of magnitude the ones offered by CPU architectures. Whereas programs written using dataflow programming languages are well suited for programming heterogeneo ...

Signal processing algorithms become more and more complex and the algorithm architecture adaptation and design processes cannot any longer rely only on the intuition of the designers to build efficient systems. Specific tools and methods are needed to cope ...

Multimedia coding technology, after about 20 years of active research, has delivered a rich variety of different and complex coding algorithms. Selecting an appropriate subset of these algorithms would, in principle, enable a designer to produce the codec supporting any desired functionality as well as any desired trade-off between compression performance and implementation complexity. Currently, interoperability demands that this selection process be hard-wired into the normative descriptions of the codec,

The paper introduces and specifies a formalism that provides complete representations of dataflow process network (DPN) program executions, by means of directed acyclic graphs. Such graphs, also known as execution trace graphs (ETG), are composed of nodes ...

This paper introduces a new methodology for pipeline synthesis with applications to data flow high-level system design. The pipeline synthesis is applied to dataflow programs whose operators are translated into graphs and dependencies relations that are th ...

The complexity of nowadays, algorithms in terms of number of lines of codes and cross-relations among processing algorithms that are activated by specific input signals, goes far beyond what the designer can reasonably grasp from the “pencil & paper” analysis of the (software) specifications. Moreover, depending on the implementation goal different measures and metrics are required at different steps of the implementation methodology or design flow of SoC. The process of extracting the desired measures need

This paper describes a new method for music onset detection. The novelty of the approach consists mainly of two elements: the time–frequency processing and the detection stages. The resonator time frequency image (RTFI) is the basic time–frequency analysis ...

This work describes an image acquisition and processing system based on a new co-processor architecture designed for CMOS sensor imaging. The platform permits to configure a wide variety of acquisition modes (random region acquisition, variable image size, ...

Large dataflow designs are a result of behavioral specification of modern complex digital systems and/or a result of unfolding and transforming looped and branched programs. Since deep-submicron silicon technology provides large amounts of available resour ...

Recently a new technique based on capacitive sensing has been developed and used to estimate the amount of moisture in polymers by means of the deviation of the dielectric constant. This technique is expected to be used for in-line monitoring of aggregate ...

The analysis of the trace graphs generated by dataflow program executions has been shown to be an effective tool for exploring and optimizing the design space of application programs on manycore/multicore platforms. In this work a new approach aiming at fi ...
