This topic aims at understanding precisely what are the mobility behaviors and aspirations of people under 18. The increasing use of ICT enables a larger access to several information (vehicle availability, travel times, costs, etc.) and payment systems. Do they help young people to travel on a daily basis? Does a better communication between parents and children help a larger autonomy for young people? In the last decades, the image of the transport system was built around the paradigm of technical progres

In Europe, the idea that coordinating transportation and urban planning is a necessary condition for setting sustainable urban development into motion has spread throughout academic and professional circles. While this concern is not new, the objectives un ...

Walking is the focus of increasing interest. However, the phenomenon of people who spontaneously walk great distances has not been investigated. Here, we analyse quantitative data from the Swiss transport micro-census (MRMT2010), containing information from 62’868 individuals interviewed by telephone throughout 2010, in a representative stratified sample covering all residents of Switzerland, who were asked about their transport activity on a random reference day. On the reference day, 11.5% of the sample s

The numbers of electric vehicles (EV) will increase as many countries perceive EVs as a solution to reduce the emissions of transportation and therefore incentivize their adoption. However, the deployment of public charging infrastructure is lagging behind ...

While built environment characteristics, in particular transport infrastructure, play a pivotal role in modal practices (Ewing & Cervero, 2010, Van Acker et al., 2007), individual attributes, for instance travel dispositions and aptitudes, are equally decisive in the choice of modes of transport (Kaufmann, 2011). In this paper, we leverage a large panel survey dataset (n=10,202) covering the Greater Geneva region (straddling Switzerland and France) conducted in 2022. We pose three hypotheses. The first is t

The bench is an essential ergonomic element to promote walking in everyday life. Even immobility associated with public benches is a key component to promote active mobility. Benches invite to active and passive participation in social life, serve as placemaker but also represent potential physical and social obstacles. Benches are markers of an inhabited city and an explicit invitation to the appropriation of public space. Benches can request and demand particular lines of actions and encourage, discourage

Mountain regions are under-represented in transport research, which tends to concentrate on urban areas. This study investigates transport mode choice in 22 locations in the Alps, using data from the 2010 Swiss transport micro-survey (hereafter: MRMT2010) which has detailed information from 68'868 people in a representative national sample who describe their transport behaviour on a reference day. The Swiss Statistical Office subdivides the territory of Switzerland into city centres, suburbs, outer suburbs,

This study examined the relationship between couple relationship satisfaction and the transitivity of ties with family and friends within couples, i.e., the tendency of partners to share friends and family. In this case, transitivity was measured by using ...

Social and territorial structures form intricate relations that transcend a social stratification or spatial focus. Territorial features and geographic displacements are structuring principles for society, as societal features and social change effect the structure and use of territory. Based on our examination of the conceptual and theoretical links between spatial and social mobility, we propose a concept that represents a new form of inequality. Termed 'motility', this construct describes the potential a

Research on bikesharing has largely focused on systems operating in large cities. Based on the Swiss experience, this paper explores the challenges that small cities (

This study employs a second-order structural model (SEM) to conduct a mediation analysis, with the objective of elucidating the intricate relationship between environmental concerns and daily mobility habits. The mediation variable used is motility, define ...

DiffUrb is an interdisciplinary research collaboration aiming at describing and understanding how urban differences in terms of diverse population groups are dealt with across five European cities: Geneva, Brussels, Hamburg, Turin, and Zurich. To this end, ...

During the first wave of COVID-19, residents’ health and well-being were challenged as residential environments suddenly had to accommodate most of the functions of an urban system. Although scholars and practitioners have proposed reconsidering dwelling r ...

Rhythmanalysis is a valuable analytical approach for charting daily rhythms, both for individuals and at the collective level, in order to feel the pulse of a territory and understand the way in which it is inhabited in terms of both space and time. Concep ...

Recent surveys by the Mobile Lives Forum show that around 30% of the French population live locally, yet many trips under 5 km are made by car. There is therefore huge potential for a modal shift to active modes of transport (Kaufmann et al. 2020, Héran 2021). A great deal of research has been carried out on cycling and walking in recent years, but mainly in disciplines similar to engineering and operational research. We have opted instead to focus our attention on comprehensive and experiential approaches
