Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) materials are increasingly used in building construction for the design of multifunctional structures. These composite materials allow the integration of structural functions, building physics functions (mainly thermal insulation) and architectural functions (complex forms and color) in single large-scale building components. GFRP materials also allow the fabrication of translucent structural components with high degree of transparency when optically aligned resins and

The energy dissipation capacity resulting from progressive cracking of the web-flange junctions (WFJs) of a pultruded GFRP deck system was experimentally investigated. Web-cantilever bending experiments up to failure were performed on two WFJ types (IfO, I ...

The rotational behavior of the web-flange junctions (WFJs) of a pultruded glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bridge deck system with trapezoidal cell cross-sectional geometry was investigated. The rotational response of three WFJ types, in two bending m ...

A design concept for engineering structures consisting of brittle FRP components and ductile adhesive joints is proposed. The elastoplastic adhesive joints provide system ductility that compensates for the material ductility that FRP composites lack. In th ...

Fracture in the complex balsa cores of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sandwich beams was analyzed. The cores were composed of high- and low-density balsa layers separated by a circular adhesive interface or FRP arch. The balsa layers were cut from panels w ...

The light diffusion of hand lay-up glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) laminates was investigated with a spectrophotometric set-up using an integrating sphere. Reinforcement weights of the laminates ranged from 410 to 3280 g/m2 and fiber volume fractions ...

In order to optimize sandwich structures, core materials of different density and thus different stiffness and strength are often combined. The material discontinuities at joints of dissimilar core materials may lead to abrupt changes of the shear angles a ...

The early-age mechanical property development of structural adhesives during low temperature curing is critical for the outdoor construction of engineering structures, such as bridges or buildings. Construction of these structures is also carried out durin ...

The total light transmittance of hand lay-up glass fiber-reinforced polymer laminates for building construction was investigated with a view to two architectural applications: translucent load-bearing structures and the encapsulation of photovoltaic cells ...

Pultruded glass fiber‐reinforced polymer (GFRP) bridge decks distribute punctual vehicular loads to the underlying superstructure and can also act as the upper chord of hybrid main girders. The deck’s structural performance in both cases is influenced by i ...

The thermomechanical recovery behavior of a commercial cold-curing structural epoxy adhesive was investigated. Exposing the adhesive to temperatures above the glass transition temperature T-g significantly increased the latter although the curing degree in ...

An analytical investigation of the buckling/wrinkling behavior of GFRP webs in cell-core sandwiches subjected to combined in-plane shear and bending stresses is conducted. Web-core panels are modeled as long orthotropic plates stabilized by a relatively th ...

The rotational behavior of the web-flange junctions (WFJs) of a pultruded GFRP bridge deck system was investigated. The rotational response of three WFJ types was characterized. An experimental procedure based on three-point bending and cantilever experiments conducted on the web elements and simple analytical models was used. The WFJs generally exhibited non-rigid and nonlinear behavior. The overall moment-rotation relationships, rotational stiffness, strength and failure modes differed depending on the we

Energetically weak points in thermally insulated building envelopes are formed by thermal breaks that are implemented to structurally connect external balconies to internal slabs. Current thermal breaks comprise stainless steel bars that penetrate the insu ...

The aim of this work was to investigate to what extent the performance of a glass fiberreinforced polymer (GFRP) sandwich slab-bridge with uniform high-density balsa core could be improved in terms of structural efficiency and weight thanks to a more compl ...
