"African Cities" offers a course on urban management and planning. After a review of the major urban themes (climate change, infrastructure and services, energy, the right to the city, land, housing, the informal economy), we will take a critical look at the tools currently used in urban management and planning. We will then look at how to manage and plan a more inclusive, productive, resilient and resource-efficient city that respects the environment.
Finally, we will look successively at the issues of city financing, the interplay of players in the governance of urban projects, and the implementation of urban planning documents.
As urban planning does not fall within a single discipline, the approach of the course is not disciplinary, but consists in discussing the links between the main thematic entries enabling us to understand and accompany the processes of city-making. The course is taught by two experienced lecturers in the field, and enriched by contributions from a number of seasoned international experts. The overall aim is to present an operational approach to the elaboration of planning documents, in particular master plans.
