This course has been prepared by an economist attached to an architecture institute, who has over 20 years' experience of teaching the basics of economic analysis, particularly for real estate, to students who are not economists.
The course will provide you with economic knowledge enabling you to understand many of the mechanisms of our market economies, such as competition, price formation, equilibria and disequilibria. It also provides a basic understanding of financial analysis. It is especially useful for those wishing to get started in real estate investment, setting up real estate operations, analyzing the economic feasibility of construction projects, etc. It can even help you prepare for the purchase of a house or apartment for your own use!
The two-part "Land and Real Estate Economics" course will help you understand
the calculations made by players in the land and real estate markets (landowners, real estate investors, etc.) how prices are formed on these markets, in relation to the housing market and public policies. The first part introduces the main methods used to calculate land and property values. The course is illustrated with examples and statistics, mainly from Switzerland.
In this first course (Land and Real Estate Economics I), we will look at..:
Arbitrage calculations and the determinants and components of the rate of return. Determining buyers' willingness to pay Competition between buyers The landowner's point of view Methods for calculating property values It is strongly recommended that you take the two parts of the course in sequence, since the second uses the concepts developed in the first. Both parts are of comparable difficulty.
Each part is structured in weekly modules. Each module consists of 5 or 6 videos explaining a theme. Each video is followed by a quiz to test the concepts covered in the video. These quizzes require algebraic and numerical calculations that can easily be performed with a calculator, or even better, a spreadsheet. A form is provided at the start of the course to remind students of the mathematical operations used in the course. This mainly involves manipulating equations to extract the desired term. At the end of each module, there is an evaluation quiz, which must be passed before moving on to the next module. This quiz is made up of small problems similar to those solved in the exercise quizzes.
