Il a reçu la bourse présidentielle des jeunes investisseurs (Presidential Young Investigator Grant) en 1990 et le prix de la Fraternité Sloan (Sloan Fellowship) en 1991. Son travail montre que les valeurs critiques d'une classe large de de systèmes de particules proches sont égales à 1, et que, suite à plusieurs travaux sur la trajectoire du mouvement brownien, incluant une simulation numérique, le nombre d'îlots browniens en 2 dimensions tend vers l'infini quand leurs tailles tendent vers 0. Il reçoit le prix Rosenbaum en 1993 lui ouvrant ainsi les portes du Isaac Newton Institute à Cambridge. Il est également décoré par le prix Rollo Davidson en 1995 et nommé membre honoraire de l'Institute of Mathematical Statistics en 2001. In the mathematical field of analysis, uniform convergence is a mode of convergence of functions stronger than pointwise convergence. A sequence of functions converges uniformly to a limiting function on a set as the function domain if, given any arbitrarily small positive number , a number can be found such that each of the functions differs from by no more than at every point in .

Interval (mathematics)

In mathematics, a (real) interval is a set of real numbers that contains all real numbers lying between any two numbers of the set. For example, the set of numbers x satisfying 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 is an interval which contains 0, 1, and all numbers in between. Other examples of intervals are the set of numbers such that 0 < x < 1, the set of all real numbers , the set of nonnegative real numbers, the set of positive real numbers, the empty set, and any singleton (set of one element).

Bounded set

In mathematical analysis and related areas of mathematics, a set is called bounded if it is, in a certain sense, of finite measure. Conversely, a set which is not bounded is called unbounded. The word "bounded" makes no sense in a general topological space without a corresponding metric. Boundary is a distinct concept: for example, a circle in isolation is a boundaryless bounded set, while the half plane is unbounded yet has a boundary. A bounded set is not necessarily a closed set and vice versa.

Uniform continuity

In mathematics, a real function of real numbers is said to be uniformly continuous if there is a positive real number such that function values over any function domain interval of the size are as close to each other as we want. In other words, for a uniformly continuous real function of real numbers, if we want function value differences to be less than any positive real number , then there is a positive real number such that at any and in any function interval of the size .

Closed set

In geometry, topology, and related branches of mathematics, a closed set is a set whose complement is an open set. In a topological space, a closed set can be defined as a set which contains all its limit points. In a complete metric space, a closed set is a set which is closed under the limit operation. This should not be confused with a closed manifold. By definition, a subset of a topological space is called if its complement is an open subset of ; that is, if A set is closed in if and only if it is equal to its closure in Equivalently, a set is closed if and only if it contains all of its limit points.
