Giuseppe Carleo is a computational quantum physicist, whose main focus is the development of advanced numerical algorithms tostudy challenging problems involving strongly interacting quantum systems.He is best known for the introduction of machine learning techniques to study both equilibrium and dynamical properties,based on a neural-network representations of quantum states, as well for the time-dependent variational Monte Carlo method.He earned a Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Theory from the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Italy in 2011.He held postdoctoral positions at the Institut d’Optique in France and ETH Zurich in Switzerland, where he alsoserved as a lecturer in computational quantum physics.In 2018, he joined the Flatiron Institute in New York City in 2018 at the Center for Computational Quantum Physics (CCQ), working as a Research Scientist and project leader, and also leading the development of the open-source project NetKet.Since September 2020 he is an assistant professor at EPFL, in Switzerland, leading the Computational Quantum Science Laboratory (CQSL).

Pathogen transmission

In medicine, public health, and biology, transmission is the passing of a pathogen causing communicable disease from an infected host individual or group to a particular individual or group, regardless of whether the other individual was previously infected. The term strictly refers to the transmission of microorganisms directly from one individual to another by one or more of the following means: airborne transmission – very small dry and wet particles that stay in the air for long periods of time allowing airborne contamination even after the departure of the host.

Airborne transmission

Airborne transmission or aerosol transmission is transmission of an infectious disease through small particles suspended in the air. Infectious diseases capable of airborne transmission include many of considerable importance both in human and veterinary medicine. The relevant infectious agent may be viruses, bacteria, or fungi, and they may be spread through breathing, talking, coughing, sneezing, raising of dust, spraying of liquids, flushing toilets, or any activities which generate aerosol particles or droplets.

Density

Density (volumetric mass density or specific mass) is the substance's mass per unit of volume. The symbol most often used for density is ρ (the lower case Greek letter rho), although the Latin letter D can also be used. Mathematically, density is defined as mass divided by volume: where ρ is the density, m is the mass, and V is the volume. In some cases (for instance, in the United States oil and gas industry), density is loosely defined as its weight per unit volume, although this is scientifically inaccurate – this quantity is more specifically called specific weight.

Relative density

Relative density, or specific gravity, is the ratio of the density (mass of a unit volume) of a substance to the density of a given reference material. Specific gravity for liquids is nearly always measured with respect to water at its densest (at ); for gases, the reference is air at room temperature (). The term "relative density" (often abbreviated r.d. or RD) is often preferred in scientific usage, whereas the term "specific gravity" is deprecated.

Exponential function

The exponential function is a mathematical function denoted by or (where the argument x is written as an exponent). Unless otherwise specified, the term generally refers to the positive-valued function of a real variable, although it can be extended to the complex numbers or generalized to other mathematical objects like matrices or Lie algebras. The exponential function originated from the notion of exponentiation (repeated multiplication), but modern definitions (there are several equivalent characterizations) allow it to be rigorously extended to all real arguments, including irrational numbers.
