Description

This lecture covers the architecture of text retrieval systems, user feedback, and indexing techniques for information retrieval, such as inverted files. It discusses the inverted file structure, addressing granularity, and access structures, including B+-Tree and Hashing. The lecture also explains Heap's Law, which relates the collection size to vocabulary size, and the payload of postings in information retrieval.

Karl Aberer

Karl Aberer received his PhD in mathematics in 1991 from the ETH Zürich. From 1991 to 1992 he was postdoctoral fellow at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1992, he joined the Integrated Publication and Information Systems institute (IPSI) of GMD in Germany, where he was leading the research division Open Adaptive Information Management Systems. In 2000 he joined EPFL as full professor. Since 2005 he is the director of the Swiss National Research Center for Mobile Information and Communication Systems ( NCCR-MICS, www.mics.ch ). He is member of the editorial boards of VLDB Journal, ACM Transaction on Autonomous and Adaptive Systems and World Wide Web Journal. He has been consulting for the Swiss government in research and science policy as a member of the Swiss Research and Technology Council ( SWTR ) from 2003 - 2011.

A B+ tree is an m-ary tree with a variable but often large number of children per node. A B+ tree consists of a root, internal nodes and leaves. The root may be either a leaf or a node with two or more children. A B+ tree can be viewed as a B-tree in which each node contains only keys (not key–value pairs), and to which an additional level is added at the bottom with linked leaves. In text retrieval, full-text search refers to techniques for searching a single computer-stored document or a collection in a full-text database. In a full-text search, a search engine examines all of the words in every stored document as it tries to match search criteria (for example, text specified by a user).
