Description

This lecture discusses the Extended Monod growth model, which relates the biodegradation rate to biomass concentration and organic matter. The model considers the growth and decay of biomass, the oxidation of organic carbon, and the balance of aqueous phase species. Equations are presented to show the transformation of general expressions for specific cases, with examples of oxidation reactions coupled with biomass growth. The lecture also covers the recycling of chemical species from biomass to the aqueous phase and the influence of biomass concentration on biodegradation rate.

Dissolved organic carbon

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is the fraction of organic carbon operationally defined as that which can pass through a filter with a pore size typically between 0.22 and 0.7 micrometers. Total organic carbon

Total organic carbon (TOC) is an analytical parameter representing the concentration of organic carbon in a sample. TOC determinations are made in a variety of application areas. For example, TOC may be used as a non-specific indicator of water quality, or TOC of source rock may be used as one factor in evaluating a petroleum play. For marine surface sediments average TOC content is 0.5% in the deep ocean, and 2% along the eastern margins.

Soil organic matter

Soil organic matter (SOM) is the organic matter component of soil, consisting of plant and animal detritus at various stages of decomposition, cells and tissues of soil microbes, and substances that soil microbes synthesize. SOM provides numerous benefits to the physical and chemical properties of soil and its capacity to provide regulatory ecosystem services. SOM is especially critical for soil functions and quality.
