PostGIS follows the Simple Features for SQL specification from the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). Technically PostGIS was implemented as a PostgreSQL external extension. Geometry types for Points, LineStrings, Polygons, MultiPoints, MultiLineStrings, MultiPolygons, GeometryCollections, 3D types TINS and polyhedral surfaces, including solids.
