Description

This lecture covers the organization of the course, the creation of voussoir components, collaborative work, and the selection of group components. Students model their voussoir components and collectively choose one for the group. They then create a common vault by including all group components. The lecture emphasizes the importance of collaborative work and the sharing of components. The students also learn about the procedures for collaborative work and the selection of components. The lecture concludes with the creation of a common vault and the inclusion of all group components.

Collaboration avec plusieurs bureaux d'architecture et, en parallèle, rédaction d'une thèse de doctorat suivie de l'obtention en 1992 du titre de Docteur ès Sciences. Bureau indépendant de 1996 à 2008; enseignement dans plusieurs écoles (dessin technique, peinture, couleurs). De 1999 à 2004, première assistante chez les professeurs Arduino Cantàfora (CRE) et Georges Abou Jaoudé (LIV, cours théorique, visualisation et représentation informatique). De 2005 à 2011, collaboratrice scientifique et chargée de cours auprès du professeur A. Cantàfora (CRE, chaire de représentation et expression) : enseignement pratique du dessin, peinture, et taille de la pierre, et théorique, analyse d'images, techniques de représentation, modes de communication, auprès des étudiants d'architecture de différents niveaux; rédaction de documentation pédagogique (cahiers d'appui des cours). Charge de cours pour une Unité d'Enseignement ENAC intitulée "Lectures du paysage par le biais de l'image et de l'art" avec Robert Ireland de 2006 à 2008. Responsable d'une nouvelle Unité d'Enseignement ENAC sur "les murs de soutènement urbains", printemps 2009 et 2010, avec O. Burdet, A. Parriaux, J-L. Moret. Participation ponctuelle en 2011, 2013 et 2014, pour l'UE-ENAC "Learning from vernacular", du professeur Pierre Frey sur la pierre et les traces de la main dans l'architecture vernaculaire. Recherche personnelle en cours sur les socles à la Renaissance italienne et française, en lien avec les professeurs Volker Hoffmann (Würzburg) et Roberto Gargiani (EPFL). Domaines d'intérêt spécifique: l'architecture à la Renaissance; la taille de la pierre et la stéréotomie; le dessin d'observation scientifique, la peinture et la gravure; la philosophie.

Groin vault

A groin vault or groined vault (also sometimes known as a double barrel vault or cross vault) is produced by the intersection at right angles of two barrel vaults. The word "groin" refers to the edge between the intersecting vaults. Sometimes the arches of groin vaults are pointed instead of round. In comparison with a barrel vault, a groin vault provides good economies of material and labor. The thrust is concentrated along the groins or arrises (the four diagonal edges formed along the points where the barrel vaults intersect), so the vault need only be abutted at its four corners.

Rib vault

A rib vault or ribbed vault is an architectural feature for covering a wide space, such as a church nave, composed of a framework of crossed or diagonal arched ribs. Variations were used in Roman architecture, Byzantine architecture, Islamic architecture, Romanesque architecture, and especially Gothic architecture. Thin stone panels fill the space between the ribs. This greatly reduced the weight and thus the outward thrust of the vault. The ribs transmit the load downward and outward to specific points, usually rows of columns or piers.

Barrel vault

A barrel vault, also known as a tunnel vault, wagon vault or wagonhead vault, is an architectural element formed by the extrusion of a single curve (or pair of curves, in the case of a pointed barrel vault) along a given distance. The curves are typically circular in shape, lending a semi-cylindrical appearance to the total design. The barrel vault is the simplest form of a vault: effectively a series of arches placed side by side (i.e., one after another). It is a form of barrel roof.

Natural selection

Natural selection is the differential survival and reproduction of individuals due to differences in phenotype. It is a key mechanism of evolution, the change in the heritable traits characteristic of a population over generations. Charles Darwin popularised the term "natural selection", contrasting it with artificial selection, which is intentional, whereas natural selection is not. Variation exists within all populations of organisms. This occurs partly because random mutations arise in the genome of an individual organism, and their offspring can inherit such mutations.
