Loss on Ignition in Lab

Description

This lecture covers the simple procedure of loss on ignition in the laboratory, which involves drying and weighing samples at specific temperatures to determine the loss of mass due to volatile compounds. Samples are dried at 105°C overnight, cooled in a desiccator for an hour, then weighed. Subsequently, they are dried at 550°C overnight, cooled, and weighed again.

Orbit determination

Orbit determination is the estimation of orbits of objects such as moons, planets, and spacecraft. On planet Earth, the term 'volatiles' often refers to the volatile components of magma. In astrogeology volatiles are investigated in the crust or atmosphere of a planet or moon. Volatiles include nitrogen, carbon dioxide, ammonia, hydrogen, methane, sulfur dioxide, water and others.

Volatile organic compound

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are organic compounds that have a high vapor pressure at room temperature. High vapor pressure correlates with a low boiling point, which relates to the number of the sample's molecules in the surrounding air, a trait known as volatility. VOCs are responsible for the odor of scents and perfumes as well as pollutants. VOCs play an important role in communication between animals and plants, e.g. attractants for pollinators, protection from predation, and even inter-plant interactions.

Self-determination

The right of a people to self-determination is a cardinal principle in modern international law (commonly regarded as a jus cogens rule), binding, as such, on the United Nations as authoritative interpretation of the Charter's norms. It states that peoples, based on respect for the principle of equal rights and fair equality of opportunity, have the right to freely choose their sovereignty and international political status with no interference. The concept was first expressed in the 1860s, and spread rapidly thereafter.
