This lecture covers topics related to power flow analysis in electrical networks, focusing on concepts such as determining power losses, calculating maximum power, and analyzing overhead lines and underground cables. It also discusses economic dispatching, optimal power flow, and loadflow equations for network nodes. The instructor explains the application of Lagrange multipliers, marginal costs, and penalty factors in economic dispatching scenarios. Sidi-Rachid Cherkaoui

Rachid Cherkaoui received the M.S. degree in electrical engineering and the Ph.D. degree from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Lausanne, in 1983 and 1992 respectively. From 1983 to 1987, he worked at Entreprises Electriques Fribourgeoises (Swiss electrical utility) developing a state estimator and security analysis tools for the HV transmission system of that company. From 1987 to 1992, he joined the power system laboratory of EPFL where he achieved his Ph.D. thesis in the field of optimal operation topologies for distribution systems. In this respect, he was the recipient of the ABB Swiss Award83. Since 1993, he is leading the research activities in the field of optimization and simulation techniques applied to electrical power and distribution systems. Presently his main research topics are electricity market deregulation, distributed generation and storage, and, power system vulnerability mitigation. He is senior member of IEEE, member of technical program committees of various conferences, member of CIGRE task forces C5-2, and IEEE Swiss Chapter officer since 2005. He serves regularly as reviewer for different journals and conferences. Dr. Cherkaoui is the author or co-author of more than 50 scientific publications.

Undergrounding

In civil engineering, undergrounding is the replacement of overhead cables providing electrical power or telecommunications, with underground cables. It helps in wildfire prevention and in making the power lines less susceptible to outages during high winds, thunderstorms or heavy snow or ice storms. An added benefit of undergrounding is the aesthetic quality of the landscape without the powerlines. Undergrounding can increase the capital cost of electric power transmission and distribution but may decrease operating costs over the lifetime of the cables.

Load-following power plant

A load-following power plant, regarded as producing mid-merit or mid-priced electricity, is a power plant that adjusts its power output as demand for electricity fluctuates throughout the day. Load-following plants are typically in between base load and peaking power plants in efficiency, speed of start-up and shut-down, construction cost, cost of electricity and capacity factor. Base load power plants are dispatchable plants that tend to operate at maximum output.

Overhead cable

An overhead cable is a cable for the transmission of information, laid on utility poles. Overhead telephone and cable TV lines are common in North America. These poles sometimes carry overhead power lines for the supply of electric power. Power supply companies may also use them for an in-house communication network. Sometimes these cables are integrated in the ground or power conductor. Otherwise an additional line is strung on the masts. Cables are arranged on poles with the most dangerous cables, that is, those carrying power, strung highest.

Power station

A power station, also referred to as a power plant and sometimes generating station or generating plant, is an industrial facility for the generation of electric power. Power stations are generally connected to an electrical grid. Many power stations contain one or more generators, rotating machine that converts mechanical power into three-phase electric power. The relative motion between a magnetic field and a conductor creates an electric current. The energy source harnessed to turn the generator varies widely.

Electric power transmission

Electric power transmission is the bulk movement of electrical energy from a generating site, such as a power plant, to an electrical substation. The interconnected lines that facilitate this movement form a transmission network. This is distinct from the local wiring between high-voltage substations and customers, which is typically referred to as electric power distribution. The combined transmission and distribution network is part of electricity delivery, known as the electrical grid.
