This lecture covers the Principal Axes Theorem in linear algebra, where for a symmetric matrix A and its associated quadratic form Q, there exists an orthogonal matrix P such that P^TAP is diagonal. The columns of P form an orthonormal basis called the principal axes of Q.

Symmetric matrix

In linear algebra, a symmetric matrix is a square matrix that is equal to its transpose. Formally, Because equal matrices have equal dimensions, only square matrices can be symmetric. Orthogonal matrix

In linear algebra, an orthogonal matrix, or orthonormal matrix, is a real square matrix whose columns and rows are orthonormal vectors.
