Giuseppe CarleoGiuseppe Carleo is a computational quantum physicist, whose main focus is the development of advanced numerical algorithms tostudy challenging problems involving strongly interacting quantum systems. He is best known for the introduction of machine learning techniques to study both equilibrium and dynamical properties, based on a neural-network representations of quantum states, as well for the time-dependent variational Monte Carlo method. He earned a Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Theory from the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Italy in 2011.He held postdoctoral positions at the Institut d’Optique in France and ETH Zurich in Switzerland, where he alsoserved as a lecturer in computational quantum physics. In 2018, he joined the Flatiron Institute in New York City in 2018 at the Center for Computational Quantum Physics (CCQ), working as a Research Scientist and project leader, and also leading the development of the open-source project NetKet.Since September 2020 he is an assistant professor at EPFL, in Switzerland, leading the Computational Quantum Science Laboratory (CQSL).
Umar SheikhTeaching & PhD PhD Students Marta Pedrini Courses Atomic and radiative processes in plasmas PHYS-762 The course covers atomic structure, collisional-radiative (CR) processes, and spectroscopic techniques. Students learn to critically apply CR models, evaluate spectroscopic tools, and interpret experimental data obtained in different plasmas.

Silvia Alessandra QuarteroniSilvia holds an M.Sc. in Computer Science from EPFL and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of York, UK. She has been a senior research fellow at Politecnico di Milano and later at the University of Trento, Italy, where she had the chance to work on Marie Curie and ERC projects relating to natural language processing. From 2012 to 2019, she was a Senior Manager and NLP expert at ELCA Informatique Switzerland, whose AI department she helped to create and expand. Silvia has joined the Swiss Data Science Center in 2019 as a Principal Data Scientist for industry collaborations with the aim of helping the industry benefit from the latest innovation in data science.
Kamiar AminianKamiar Aminian received the M.S. degree in electrical engineering in 1982, the Ph.D degree in biomedical engineering in 1989 and the Postgraduate degree on technical computing in 1993 from Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). He was assistant professor (1994-1996) with Sharif University of Technology (Tehran). He joint EPFL in 1996 where he is currently Professor of medical instrumentation and the director of the Laboratory of Movement Analysis and Measurement in the Institute of Bioengineering of EPFL. His research interests include methodologies for human movement monitoring and analysis in real world conditions mainly based on wearable technologies and inertial sensors with emphasis on gait, physical activity and sport. His research aims to perform outcome evaluation in orthopaedics, to improve motor function and intervention programs in aging and patients with movement disorders and pain, and to identify metrics of performance in sport science.
Kamiar Aminian is a member of the International Society of Posture and Gait Research, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the European Society of Movement Analysis in Adults and Children, the Prevention of fall Network Europe, the Intentional Society of Biomechanics and the President of the 3D analysis of the human movement group. He is author or co-author of more than 450 scientific papers published in reviewed journals and presented at international conferences and holds 10 patents related to medical devices.

Marc VielleMarc Vielle has obtained a PhD degree in economics from the University Panthéon-Sorbonne (Paris). He worked as an economic researcher at the Laboratoire ERASME of Ecole Centrale de Paris and Université de Paris I (1987-1992), where he developed and managed the macroeconomic model HERMES-France. In 1991 he joined the Commissariat à lEnergie Atomique (CEA) as senior economist where he participated to the development of two models (GEM-E3 and PRIMES) funded by the European Commission. In 1996 he joined the Institut dEconomie Industrielle of Toulouse directed by Jean-Jacques Laffont. In 2003 he joined the Laboratoire dEconomie des Ressources Naturelles directed by Michel Moreaux. Since 2007, Marc works at EPFL.
He is member of the GEMINI-E3 team and participates to the development of the world general equilibrium model GEMINI-E3. Marc has a strong experience in economic modeling (especially CGE modeling), quantitative analysis, energy and climate change policies. He has contributed to several research projects funded by national governments, European Commission and private companies.
