DNA Integrity of Chironomids and Oligochaetes Is Maintained During Long‐Term Storage in Neutral Buffered Formalin: Implications for Macroinvertebrate Monitoring

Oligochaetes and chironomids are valuable bioindicators but ethanol preservation is problematic: it causes oligochaetes to disintegrate and forces a trade‐off in insects between DNA integrity and morphological structures. Aiming to develop genetic oligochaete and chironomid indices based on the high‐throughput sequencing (HTS) of genetically tagged specimens, we tested whether long‐term specimen storage in neutral buffered formalin affects the success rate of subsequent genetic analyses. We performed PCR am

Review of design works for the conversion of sugarcane to first and second-generation ethanol and electricity

François Maréchal, Adriano Viana Ensinas, Rami Bechara

The conversion of sugarcane, the world's largest crop, to energy vectors, namely first and second-generation ethanol and electricity, is an ongoing scientific endeavor. This conversion makes use of complex processes with numerous unit operations and proces ...

Life Cycle Assessment of Sugar Crops and Starch-Based Integrated Biorefineries

Edgard Gnansounou

Sugar crops or starch based integrated biorefinery incorporates second (2G) generation ethanol production based on abundant lignocellulose feedstock into first (1G) generation ethanol production process with a possibility to issue various co-products such as sugar, molasses, electricity etc. This novel concept is promising to enhance the traditional 1G biorefinery and replace refinery based on fossil fuels. However, further economic and environmental investigations are required. This chapter presents a comp

Reduction of process steam demand and water-usage through heat integration in sugar and ethanol production from sugarcane - Evaluation of different plant configurations

Adriano Viana Ensinas

The sugarcane industry represents one of the most important economic activities in Brazil producing sugar and ethanol for the internal and external markets. There are also plants dedicated only to ethanol production. The aim of this study is to accomplish ...

Product diversification in the sugarcane biorefinery through algae growth and supercritical CO 2 extraction: Thermal and economic analysis

François Maréchal, Adriano Viana Ensinas

The sugarcane sector in Brazil has undergone a major modernization in the last thirty years. Embracing the biorefinery concept, this sector is investigating bioproduct diversification and mostly putting a lot of effort and investment on second generation e ...

Enhanced simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of pretreated beech wood by in situ treatment with the white rot fungus Irpex lacteus in a membrane aerated biofilm reactor

Robert Lawrence Shahab

The aim of the present study was to investigate the combination of steam pretreatment and biological treatment with lignin degrading fungal strains in order to enable efficient bioprocessing of beech wood to ethanol. In a sequential process of steam and fu ...

Thermo-economic and environmental comparison of supercritical water and enzymatic hydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse in a biorefinery concept

François Maréchal, Adriano Viana Ensinas

In this study, we discuss the difference regarding thermo-economic and environmental (water intake) aspects between two methods of biomass hydrolysis. A thermo-economic model was developed using Aspen Plus® and MATLAB software in order to analyze the energ ...

Multi-objective optimization of a sugarcane biorefinery for integrated ethanol and methanol production

François Maréchal, Adriano Viana Ensinas, Emanuela Peduzzi, Priscilla Caliandro

The present study evaluates a sugarcane biorefinery producing ethanol through juice fermentation and methanol via gasification of sugarcane lignocellulosic residues and liquid fuel synthesis. Two technologies of gasification named entrained flow and circul ...

Modeling Land-Use Change Effects of Biofuels Policies: Coupling Economic Models and LCA

Edgard Gnansounou

Assessing the effect of land-use change (LUC) induced by biofuel policies on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions required coupling and adapting models to address the complex interaction linking biofuels with agricultural and energy markets and the global scope of LUC. Coupling economic-spatial and biophysical models allowed to address iLUC GHG emissions from biofuels, which magnitude range between 10 and 340 gCO2eq/MJ, depending on the feedstock and origin, the models, assumptions an data used, the biofuel scena
