I am a geomechanics researcher with interests in the mechanical behavior of the Earth's materials at conditions pertaining to the shallow Earth and upper mantle. In my studies, I employ laboratory geomechanics backed by x-ray methods, advanced constitutive modeling, and material theories to study failure patterns across scales spanning from the grain-scale up to the field-scale.

Valerio PiazzaTeaching & PhD PhD Students Claire Valentine Blaga, Matilde Cantele, Julia Sarah Marhic Past EPFL PhD Students as codirector Michele Zendrini Courses Functional properties of materials MSE-210 The main objective of this course is to present the concepts allowing the understanding of the fundamental principles that enable to predict the properties of the materials. The goal is that with these concepts, one will be able to realize material design and/or to understand novel materials.
Sébastien VaucherTeaching & PhD Past EPFL PhD Students as codirector Thomas Alexandre, Kwanghoon Choi Courses Materials selection MSE-474 Propose suitable materials, design, and production routes depending on different performance criteria using a computer based software approach. The course is based on Prof. Mike Ashby's well known "Ashby plots" comparing different material properties (mechanical, thermal, chemical, etc.).

Polymer design at nanoscaleBiologically-inspired polymers
Mission
Research at the Laboratory of Polymer (LP) focuses on the development of novel advanced polymeric materials with potential applications in optics, electronics or medicine. The philosophy is that precise control over nanoscale structure is an important prerequisite to tailor polymer properties. To this end, a “bottom-up” approach is followed, which starts with designing a new material at the molecular level, in order to be able to pr
