Assessment of green mobility scenarios on European energy systems

The paradigm shift in the energy policy of the European Union confronts the member states with the task of developing future renewable and fossil-free energy systems. This change involves the installation of intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, which induce a demand for storage capacity. The modelling of smart cities with electrified mobility allows the optimisation of mobility and renewable energy combination. However, in order to analyse the system as a whole, system-based cross-s

Heavy Impurity Confinement in Hybrid Operation Scenario Plasmas with a Rotating 1/1 Continuous Mode

Jonathan Graves, Wilfred Anthony Cooper, David Pfefferlé, Madhusudan Raghunathan

In future tokamaks like ITER with tungsten walls, it is imperative to control tungsten accumulation in the core of operational plasmas, especially since tungsten accumulation can lead to radiative collapse and disruption. We investigate the behaviour of tu ...

Asset pricing with arbitrage activity

We study an economy populated by three groups of myopic agents: constrained agents subject to a portfolio constraint that limits their risk taking, unconstrained agents subject to a standard nonnegative wealth constraint, and arbitrageurs with access to a credit facility. Such credit is valuable as it allows arbitrageurs to exploit the limited arbitrage opportunities that emerge endogenously in reaction to the demand imbalance generated by the portfolio constraint The model is solved in closed-form, and we

'Peak Oil' As Classical Economic Process

Forecasts about 'peak oil', the limits of oil production, are the subject of controversies. 'Peak oil' forecasts are based on extrapolations of a priori chosen mathematical models fitted to field data. Scientifically that is not very sound. To clarify this ...

Social-Aware Coordination of Multi-robot Systems Based on Institutions

Alcherio Martinoli

Institutional robotics (IR) is an approach to the coordination of multi-robot systems that draws inspiration from social sciences, namely from institutional economics. Using the concept of institution, it aims to provide a comprehensive strategy for specifying social interactions (e.g., norms, roles, hierarchies) among robots. In previous work, we have introduced a control methodology for multi-robot systems that takes into account institutions in order to create an Institutional Agent Controller (IAC) that

Synergy between ion temperature gradient turbulence and neoclassical processes in global gyrokinetic particle-in-cell simulations

Laurent Villard, Stephan Brunner, Trach-Minh Tran, Alberto Bottino, Sébastien Jolliet, Ben McMillan, Thibaut Vernay

Based on the CYCLONE case, simulations of collisional electrostatic ion temperature gradient (ITG) microturbulence carried out with the global gyrokinetic particle-in-cell (PIC) code ORB5 are presented. Considering adiabatic electrons, an increase in ion h ...

THERMOECONOMIC ANALYSIS AND OPTIMISATION OF AIR-BASED BOTTOMING CYCLES FOR WATER-FREE HYBRID SOLAR GAS-TURBINE POWER PLANTS

Among the plethora of alternatives available, concentrated solar power (CSP) appears as one of the most favourable options. The stability and dispatchability of production achievable by the integration of storage and fuel-solar hybridisation are amidst the major advantages of this technology. Nevertheless, conventional CSP plants are based on stream-turbine cycles which consume large amounts of water. In addition to the low thermodynamic efficiency of this type of cycle, the installation of such plants in w

Global simulations of tokamak microturbulence: finite beta effects and collisions

Laurent Villard, Stephan Brunner, Trach-Minh Tran, Alberto Bottino, Sébastien Jolliet, Ben McMillan, Thibaut Vernay

In this paper, we present global nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations including finite beta effects and collisions in tokamak geometry. Global electromagnetic simulations using conventional delta-f particle in cell methods are very demanding, with respect to ...

Optigaz. Thermoeconomic Modeling and Optimization for the Synthesis, Design and Operation of Combined Cycles and their Associated Gas Pipelines (Project Description and Modeling)

This article outlines the objectives of Project OPTIGAZ and in general terms describes the methodological approach being used and developed for modeling and optimizing the synthesis (configuration), component design and operation of energy systems. In particular, this approach will be used for looking at new combined cycle and retrofit options and the gas pipelines which supply the fuel that they use. A final goal of this project is to propose long term technology options which might parallel developments i

Thermoeconomic optimization of the retrofit of an existing steam cycle power plant.

Daniel Favrat

Combined cycles are inherently modular, since they are composed of one or several gas turbines cycles coupled with a steam cycle. Thus, it is often possible to consider repowering of conventional steam power plants by replacing the boiler with a gas turbine and a heat recovery steam generator. It constitutes an interesting option to increase power outputs and efficiencies and reduce specific emissions at moderate costs due to the reuse of existing parts and plant infrastructure. The goal of this study was t

The Environomic Analysis and Optimization of a Gas Turbine Cycle with Cogeneration.

Methodologies developed for the analysis, improvement and optimization of energy systems should take into account not only energy use (exergy consumption) and financial resources expended (economics), but the scarcity both present and future of all resources used as well as any pollution and degradation of the environment which may occur. Along these lines, a global methodology, which takes these factors into consideration by providing a vehicle for formulating and optimizing an environomic (thermodynamic,
